  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis, I am involved in various different transactions. Due to the rotation plan at BCLP, I am currently based in Structured Finance, where I am working on a LIBOR reform project for a global oil and gas company. I get a lot of exposure to working with the client, drafting documents, managing transactions and also learn of the partner in the team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt and developed a lot of skills. For example, I have learnt how to manage client relationships, how to draft legal documents and how to manage my work and study appropriately. I have developed my team work and leadership skills, as well as my own confidence as a person. This has all been really beneficial to me on a personal and professional level.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy it very much. I think choosing an apprenticeship with BCLP was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I enjoy the variety of work, the people and the amount of experience I will gain on the programme. I feel valued by my colleagues and the firm as a whole, and have been given a lot of opportunities for which I will always be grateful.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • In my opinion, the programme is very well structured. As I mentioned earlier in my review, there is a rotation plan in place for apprentices. This is where you move into a different team every 6, 12 or 18 months. Got example, I spent 12 months in Real Estate and will be spending just over 18 months in Structured Finance. There is also an apprenticeship manager to help manage progression and personal development.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I would say I receive a lot of support from BCLP, in particular from my apprenticeship manager. The firm is really keen to push and promote us as apprentices and want us to thrive and succeed. My apprenticeship manager has always been there for me if I had any problems or issues I wanted to discuss. Colleagues as a whole are also really supportive and everyone tries to help each other.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I think the support from my training provider is good. They are there to assist with queries and help in developing my knowledge of the law. We have an apprenticeship manager at the training provider who is very helpful and supportive. Some improvements could be made in terms of the delivery systems for the learning, as I find this quite difficult at times.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think my studies and qualifications through my training provider have helped me to perform better in my role. I get a solid foundation in legal knowledge which I then develop on and use every day in my job. I recall particularly I had a query on an issue when I was in Real Estate, and I used what I had learnt in Land Law to help me figure out a solution.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are! We have a very strong I&D set up at BCLP. I for example am part of the social mobility group, which looks to promote opportunities for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. We also have an LGBTQ* committee, culture strand and social committee who are coming up with new ideas, plans and initiatives all the time. We also have sports teams in our Manchester office e.g football, cricket and netball.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a very good firm looking to constantly improve and evolve in the market. BCLP work for several Fortune 500 companies, so there is always interesting and challenging work to do. They are very supportive and really help to nurture talent through the apprenticeship. There are clear progression plans and opportunities to go above and beyond what you already do.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner?
  • I would say just be confident, believe in yourself, show what you can bring to the firm and show a willingness to adapt and learn. Really let that shine through in your application. Also try to link your experiences to what you think you can help lead on in the future.
