  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Civil Engineering Apprentice with experience in the transportation sector, working on Highway Authority road schemes throughout the UK. Gained experience in design of road markings and traffic signs using PDS Line/Sign and AutoCAD production of drawings. I am currently attending college one day per week as well as completing an SVQ Level 6 Build Environment and Design.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My confidence has greatly increased since starting my apprenticeship. I have learned many new skills such as: ● Highway Engineering ● Civil Engineering ● AutoCAD ● Civil 3D ● PDS Line ● PDS Sign I have also developed existing skills such as communication, co-ordination and working with a team.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy being a part of my team in the transport division as well as working alongside other disciplines. It has been very rewarding working within Mott MacDonald, I feel that I am a valued member of the team and am regularly challenged. Working here has exceeded my expectations greatly!

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My apprenticeship is well structured and I am assigned 20% of my time to off the job training. I attend college one day a week and have regular contact/training with Mott MacDonald's learning development team as well as external organisations I can go to regarding any queries.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel I receive adequate support from the company, including HR, Managers and mentors. I have been supported in making my own decisions and have been provided with the necessary guidance.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Even with the challenges of home learning due to COVID, the college have been supportive and given some leeway and guidance where necessary. They have been very helpful and have planned interactive lessons to engage us as much as possible.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my qualification gives me a better understanding of the technical aspects of the job and explains in detail why aspects of the job are done in the way they are. I find it very interesting and useful.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There's a sports and social club that regularly hosts events as well as networking events within the company and external that we are encouraged to attend.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • As an employee-owned company, I feel valued. Mott MacDonald acts in the interests of its employees and has the feel of a small business even though there are almost 17,000 employees globally. I enjoy working here and hope to still be here in the years to come.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
  • Preparation is key! The best way to go about it is prepare little and often, try not to worry and be yourself!
