  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an undergraduate engineer I will work alongside multiple RDD teams during my time at the Dyson institute. 3 days a week I work with my allocated team on a specified project that has been assigned for my rotation (~ 4 months in length), learning on the job with help from my allocated line manager and mentor.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I started my role after my A-levels with very minimal engineering knowledge and experience. Over the 4-5 months that I have learnt a lot about both engineering and being an employee. For example, in my last rotation I worked in the noise and vibration department, I am now able to run tests in the anechoic chamber and perform complex calculations relating to machine acoustics after having no knowledge prior to starting.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy the work side of the programme, having the opportunity to cover many areas of engineering during my time here makes the whole experience much more engaging. I find the degree side of the apprenticeship less exciting and sometimes struggle to stay engaged but understand that I the log term it will support me in my role as a engineer

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme seems well organised with appropriate training and support being provided for the work role. The structure or 3 days work and 2 days study per week can prove challenging and I sometimes worry if I am too busy although there is a large amount of support available to help me deal with this. The degree provision can sometimes feel disorganised with materials being delayed in their release or even missing.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • During my rotations, I have received a large amount of support from my line manager and motor. I feel that I can ask for support from anyone at Dyson and having a student support adviser helps a lot in having easy access to support when needed. The general willingness to help each other aids in the ease of accessing support when needed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • WMG provides the option to access support from tutors throughout the learning process. This support can sometimes feel less approachable but believe this may be down to the current covid situation that means we have not met our lecturers face to face. We have also had extra sessions to help with our apprenticeship standard although i think ore support on this would be useful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am yet to use anything learnt in my degree within my job role but can see how it may help me in future rotations.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of extra activities to get involved in through both Dyson and the Dyson institute. For example i have become a member of the UEC (undergrad experience comity) allowing me to get involved in sustainability action throughout Dyson. There have also been many social events and groups to get involved in.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The Dyson institute provides a great opportunity to get hands on experience s and engineer while gaining a debt free degree. the sense of community here makes it a pleasant place to work and live. I also think it is a great place to wide future prospects.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology?
  • Be yourself. Yes Dyson want to hire intelligent people, but from the people I have met here I can tell that they also want to hire good, friendly and open minded people who are up for a challenge. If the Dyson institute is right for you, then you'll know, and if you're right for the Dyson institute, then they'll know too.
