  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • At Greene King my role involves serving a range of drinks including both alcoholic and non-alcoholic to various customers and clients, I also take food orders at the bar. When operating on the floor I run food out to customers, clear away empty plates and glasses. once the tables are clear of customers I wipe them down and ensure that there are enough menus for the number of seats per table as well as ensuring that the table has the correct cutlery, crockery and glassware.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my time at Greene King so far I have learnt a few new skills including how to deal with a wide range of customers, how to pour different alcoholic drinks including draft lager and draft bitter. I have improved my communication skills as within this job you are required to take to both customers and other members of staff in order for the pub to run smoothly and for food and drinks to be correct

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • on the job has not been as difficult as I thought it would be as I seem to have picked up what needs to be done quite quickly. Off the job also does not seem as daunting as I had though as I have found out that for my business project I only have to write a maximum of around 2000 words instead of the 10000 words I had feared I would have to write.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From my past experience over the last year and a bit, I have only had to do one module every month so this takes unnecessary pressure away. I have practice exams and mock exams which will allow me to see how well I am doing and how prepared I am. I know what happens at the end of my course so I am not left wondering what happens next which i like about the structure of my programme.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer as any time I have had an issue or problem I have been able to talk to them and they have been able to sort it out. This ranges from pressing the wrong button on the till to helping me to deal with complaints from customers and also helping to answer any questions i have about my course or my future in the programme. I have also been given some details of possible roles i can undertake at the company.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • At the moment the support I receive is different to the support I will receive later on in the course. The support at the moment has been things like being reminded of when my next meeting is, filling me in on what I am going to be doing at the end of my course and also what sort of daily tasks i will be doing on a daily and weekly basis. Later in my course this will change as my skills improve.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • A general understanding of hospitality and also a detailed understanding of other areas such as discrimination allows me to ensure that I am acting and performing in the correct manner. There is also potential for progression with courses and apprenticeships that lead on from the one I am currently on. There are some seminars i can attend and small meetings within the workplace to also improve my skills and help my training improve and use this within my job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Since i have started my apprenticeship at Greene King i have not found or heard of any different activities to partake. If I had the option to do some extra-curricular activities, I would love to join and have a five a side football team to join during the summer months. In winter if there was snooker or pool competition to join that would be nice. Apart from these we only have work related team meetings and such.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Greene King to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Greene King to a friend because it is a good company to work for as the staff are all really friendly and all the staff are willing to help each other out and go the extra mile for each other even when it means they have to stay later. You can ask any questions and share any issues you have with your local manager and group of co-workers as well which i find really useful in my job role.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Greene King?
  • The tips and advice I would be to giving to others applying to Greene King would be to be prepared to work hard and have to give the job your all. Working weekends is a must but when its busy the time flies so this isn't too bad. Be prepared to have more confidence as you will need to speak up now and then. I have enjoyed my time at Greene King so far and i have made new friends which is always nice.
