  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in the corporate tax team which mean I work with a variety of companies in different sectors. I am involved in tax audits, corporate tax returns and tax advisory work. I have a portfolio of clients which allows me to build a relationship with the clients and become their day to day point of contact. I have been able to influence my client portfolio so these are based in industries which interest me.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my soft skills working in the office - in particular I have developed my presenting, team work, organisation and networking skills. My team have supported my over the past year and really assist with the growth of my role in the team ancouraging me to get involved in group discussions improving my confidence. Separately, I have developed my technical skills as a result of my studies towards my ACA qualification and CTA qualification.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme and do not regret my decision to join an apprenticeship programme rather than going to university. I have been able to develop great connections with my team and my fellow apprentices who joined EY at the same time as me. I believe that this programme has given me the opportunity to get ahead with my career as I will be a year ahead if I decided to go to university and then join EY.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I have internal trainings which is run by EYand allows me to develop my technical knowledge in my specialism (tax). These courses are run approximately 3 times a year and it allows me the opportunity to network with apprentices in other offices. Separately I have external training with Kaplan. The remained of my time is spent working in the office with my team advising clients and preparing returns. My team ensure that I always have work to complete.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • When I joined the programme I was given a buddy who was my day to day contact for general queries. In addition, I have been assigned a counsellor who supports my career development. We have regular feedback cycles which gives me the opportunity to clearly identify development areas and discuss how to approach these with my counsellor to improve further. I am generally pleased with the level of support provided by EY as I entered the programme directly from school.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I go to college with Kaplan Financial - the arrangement for my learning depends on the course which I am studying but this varies between self study, face to face learning and video learning. The tutors at my college are happy to stay behind after college days to help answer any additional queries and the website for our learning also provides and forum which allows direct support when we are outside of college hours or weeks.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My ACA qualification provides me with a general accounting knowledge and an awareness of audit, accounting, tax, financial planning and management accounting. I do not use all of this knowledge in my direct work but it helps to understand the reasoning behind so,e of our practises. The studying towards CTA will be exams which are directly related to my day to day work and will help me directly in my work and technical knowledge.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The team are very social and we regularly go out for drinks which are often funded by the firm. These events outside of working hours allows you the opportunity to form closer relationships with your colleagues. EY also has a variety of networks including the women's network, netball network and the football network. This allows you the opportunity to meet people outside your immediate team and network with others who have similar interests.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The firm have supported me during my career. They are a very friendly and inclusive firm and my team make me feel valued and a key member. They are supporting me through my studies allowing me the opportunity to gain new skills whilst learning on the job - I have always found that practical hands on experience helps me learn much faster. The company have given me the opportunity to work on our clients immediately which is an amazing opportunity.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • The team are very supportive but it is important to be proactive and take imitative with your work. If you have queries then you should ask as the team will always be happy to help with your queries. You should take notes when you attend training to ensure that you are not repeating your queries and wasting the teams time. However I would recommend that you enjoy yourself and make the most of all your opportunities.
