  • An overview of my current responsibilities as an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor are as follows: •Preparing subcontract agreements •Supplier competency (pre-approval) assessments •Updating project costing tools at completion for clients database •Assessing compensation events •Supplier valuations/payment certificates •Preparing/issuing instructions to suppliers •Liaising with centralised buying department regarding enquiries •Providing substantiation to cost consultants for applications for payments •Supporting commercial, design and operational teams •Working with clients data base and contract administration •Assisting QS with commercial reporting • Experience at working in a Joint Venture

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My skills and capabilities include: • Fully computer literate • Competent at use of Excel and formula’s • Proactive towards finding solutions to issues as they arise • Good team member, experienced at working in a collaborative environment • Keen attention to detail • Adaptive and flexible to working in new environment • Good communication skills • Understanding of NEC contract and working under option C • Fast learner and able to use a range of software and databases for the client and employer

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am currently working as an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor and studying in college towards a Construction and Civil Engineering NVQ level 3. During this time I have thoroughly enjoyed learning new things about the construction industry and being a part of the process that goes in to developing projects. Not only learning about my job and what I can do to be a better Quantity Surveyor, but learning about other roles within the business as well.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • When at J N Bentley and being on an apprenticeship when I first arrived I had a 2 week induction where I was trained in basic health and safety and learned about what being on site would be like and why training is so important. as well as this, I received adequate support whilst learning and getting up to speed on everything I would need to know in order to be good at my job.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Whilst being at J N Bentley I have received thorough and consistent support regarding my learning from when I began to now. at the beginning, I had adequate help when problem solving and being introduced to the methods in which I would have to use to do my job. I was seated next to people who worked in the same area as me and therefore I could ask questions on the relevant projects when required

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Whilst being on an apprenticeship at J N Bentley, I have received great support from L S P (training provider) both at the beginning of the apprenticeship and now, my tutor is always available when I need help with college work and explains fully to ensure I understand what's required with the work. I have thoroughly enjoyed being taught by L S P as I believe it has helped me to fully understand everything

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • When learning in college about everything, the main aspects in which I believe helps me day to day is learning about the construction process and what goes in to projects, because I sometimes don't go out on site and being in college helps me to gain a better understanding of the construction and what is involved to ensure everything runs smoothly. As well as this, learning about the different roles in the industry helps to ensure I know who to ask if I have any questions

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At J N Bentley there are usually a range of extra curricular activities which are open to everyone to ensure everyone is involved within the office and therefore everyone gets to know each other. Examples of extra curricular activities which are sometimes organised at J N Bentley are as follows: Football matches, Organised meals out, Quizzes, charity events, online meetings to chat and get to know everyone, birthday treats, small organise competitive games and much more

  • Yes

  • I would recommend J N Bentley to a friend as I believe they are a good company to work for, with all of the added benefits that you receive whilst working there and the friendly atmosphere which is always present. Along with this, there are loads of opportunities with in the company which ensures there are always movements within the office and if there is a particular opportunity within the company, it is available to anyone


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JN Bentley?
  • Tips I would have to anyone who is thinking of applying to J N Bentley is to just be yourself and enjoy the process, the interviews are made to not be daunting and therefore enables you to be yourself and just be involved with what's going on, within the company there is always opportunities to move to a different job role or travel to different sites and offices, so whatever you are thinking of applying for just enjoy it as there's always room to move
