  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job role as a technical instructor is within therapy services, working alongside physiotherapists and occupational therapists across trauma orthopaedic and elective wards. I support patients with their mobility, I do assessments with patients to ensure they are independent and safe with active daily living tasks when they are discharged. I provide and fit equipment for patients at home if needed. If patients need further rehab I give them information on intermediate settings before going home. I practise mobility With patients using different walking aids and encourage patients to do the exercises I teach them. I undertake initial interviews with patients which gather information on their home circumstances with how they normally manage.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have gained a lot of confidence in my job role during my apprenticeship, I have developed within my career from a therapy assistant to a technical instructor in the past year of doing my apprenticeship. I feel I have developed my communication skills especially speaking on the phone as this is something I wasn’t confident with. I have developed my organisation skills as I have had to organise a fine balance between work life, college and family time. I think the apprenticeship has gave me confidence to contribute more to team discussions.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my college course, it works perfectly around my work and family life as I only have to attend college one day a week. The college is close to my home so I don’t have to commute far. The college tutors are very helpful and supportive as always able to contact. The assignments are all done online so I am able to get on with my work at any computer. The assignments all relate to my work role so this makes doing coursework more manageable.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My college course is very organised, we have contact with our tutors weekly. We have reviews with our tutor to discuss if we are on target with assignments, what we think is going well or what we could work on. I really like one file, it is easy to use and straight forward as I haven’t always been brilliant with technology. I think the Course is well structured with assignments even through this pandemic.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Yes I would recommend a friend to work for the NHS. It has lots of benefits such as more annual leave days than other employers, the maternity pay is well paid. You have increments every year for your pay. There is lots of opportunities to progress within your work role.
