  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • The work experience involved in depth learning about the various different roles within Mace from graduates who do the job themselves. I was also able to learn about the roles available to me with my qualifications and other important things like how to achieve professional chartership status. I was able to network with most of the graduates and others partaking in the Insight Week programme and had the opportunity to ask a wide variety of questions which will definitely help me moving forward.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • Since it was an insight into Mace, and unfortunately due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it took place online but was nonetheless an amazing experience. The presentations delivered focused on what it’s like to work within different roles at Mace and the skills required to do so such as teamwork, communication and time management. Mace are also offering employability sessions to those who took part in the Insight Week where they will look through our CV’s and offer advice on anyone wishing to make job applications in the future.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
  • I enjoyed the work experience a lot as it gave me a different and very real perspective of what it’s like working in the construction industry. Having worked on sites before, it’s easy to guess what it would be like but having those who actually do the job take there time to explain it in detail has given me a much better understanding. It has also given me the courage and motivation to pursue a career in the construction industry, and with Mace in particular.

  • 4. How well organised was your work experience?
  • Considering it was online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it seems that Mace put a lot of effort in delivering an informative and enjoyable experience. There were a significant amount of breaks so we were not sitting at the screen for too long, and minor adjustments were made when sessions may have overrun so we didn’t miss out on anything. Apart from the technical difficulties that no one could be prepared for, the session was very organised.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • The last day had sessions which primarily focused on this aspect and the company’s attitude to staff and their future. We were introduced to Mace Networks which are essentially support groups for minorities such as disabled employees or ex-military employees. Mace is striving for diversity in their workforce and is trying to lead the industry in doing so. This is amazing for me coming from a Black African background, and I feel that I’ll be confident and well supported if working for Mace
