  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • while working at Toymaster i am responsible for opening and closing the store on a daily basis this comes alongside a number of small tasks that need t be done every day just to keep the shop open and running properly, i am also responsible for dealing with customers inside and outside of the store as we deal with lots of online selling as well. as i have now become more comfortable with how the business works i am now also in charge of dealing with certain suppliers and making sure we have the right stock in that works with what customers want as well as what is popular.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • since i started in September the most noticeable skills i have developed is my people skills, i am now much more comfortable talking to people weather it be suppliers customers or managers this is important for communication within the business and can help give the customers the best experience possible when in store. i also feel i have improved my basic math skills as i am dealing with money and counting on a daily basis.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • the program as a whole i would say is enjoyable as you do get to do different things weathers its written work or the actual job itself however as most things after a long period of time it can become difficult to stay motivated, i think it can be hard for apprentices as many other people our age are in school or collage doing less than half the hours we do and even tho it is a job i have found it to have a impact on social life. i understand why the hours are longer and dont really know how to get around it but just something to consider before applying is that you will be working 30-40 hours a week where as in collage you may only have to do 15.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • i do think that the program is well structured however can be difficult to understand through one file as the information is not always clear as to what you are doing or what you will be doing in the future bu the overall time frame is good as it allows you to get the qualification in under two years if you move quicker and that can be very helpful. other parts such as meeting and observation can be fitted in pretty well as well

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • i am under special circumstances within my organisation as my father owns the business however other stockholder and supervisors are very supportive and always ready to help with witness testimony's or anything else i might need to further add to my portfolio of evidence. and my father and his business partner who are joint directors are also very supportive letting me pick my own project and buget to ensure i can get the best results possible.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • my assessor can be very helpful at times providing any and all information that i need for my work as well as regularly coming out to see me in my workplace so she can get a better feel for what it is i am actually doing. however because we only see each other maybe once a month it can be difficult to keep motivated and i lack reminders of upcoming task but apart from that i receive good support from my assessor.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • i feel as though in theory the program should help be become better within my role that because there are so many people doing it in so many different companies it can be very vague and hasn't actually helped me with my job all that much, there are concepts and things that are relevant but i don't think that this program has helped me with my job. overall i am dispensation with this aspect of the program but it hasn't given me much in terms of becoming better at my job or anything in terms of sales.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Toymaster to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • i would recommend this company to a friend because it provides a positive workspace where there is plenty of time and support for you while doing an apprenticeship as well as it probably being one of the more exciting places to do an apprenticeship. the only downside is that it is a very small company and you will often find yourself working alone but if you can get over that its a great company to work for.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Toymaster?
  • make sure you have some experience within retail making yourself worthwhile as you will need little training, also make sure you can show you are trustworthy as you will be left with money and keys that are your responsibility and most importantly make sure you are self motivated not someone they will have to tel you what to do someone that just finds something that needs doing and does it they do not want someone to just sit behind the till all day you have to be able to fill your won time and stay motivated and excited about what what you are doing so customers have a good experience as well be positive and match there energy.
