  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is basically an office assistant. I do; photocopying, scanning, printing, emails, reception cover, grants work, helping with different teams when needed, post coming into the office and out the office, signing people into the building, lunch/milk runner, data transfer and currently working from home. One of the things i do everyday is the emails for the children's magazines, from these emails I get competition entries and questions. I also get to help pick the competition winners.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt more about computer skills, as this is my first office job. I have developed my knowledge of microsoft office, I have learnt how I can use word, excel and powerpoint to help me with my work. I have also developed a telephone manner, as I cover reception a lot. This has been quite challenging for me as I am uncomfortable talking on the phone, but I am getting better every time I get a call while covering reception. My teamwork has gotten better as I work with lot's of different teams.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Half and Half, there are some days that I enjoy where I am busy and doing a different range of things. Then other times, I don't enjoy it as it can be slow, or I have barely any work to keep going, and i feel sometimes that i get the jobs that the others don't want to do. I sometimes feel like I am the bottom of the pile and I'm just there to help the others.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • At the start there was no organisation or structure. Work didn't know what work to set me or what I should do, as they've never had an apprentice before. Also college were messing us around with actual apprenticeship start date and I had to get intouch with the college to sort this out. I feel now it is more organised as i have been here nearly a year and they understand what work to give me to help me.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have always had some support from my employer. At the start I don't feel like there was as much as there should have been. But now since working from home, I feel the support has gone up a lot and I feel i can approach people more now, when I need assistance or help. I do try to check in with my line manager or HR as often as I can just to talk to somebody.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My assessor is great and gives me loads of support. She has been a great help and has guided me and given me lots of information to help me with my progress. My assessor has always been there to answer my questions when I've been stuck about something in my coursework or if i have had an issue with work. The communication is brilliant as I can call my assessor or email her and she supports me.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my qualification helps me perform better as it gives me more knowledge and understanding of what my role is and how it works in the office environment. It has helped me to understand about diversity and inclusion in the workplace, reception duties and working with other teams to understand how everyone works together to get the final product. I think it is a good qualification to get as a starter as you learn a range of office things.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are sometimes extra activities, for example my second week I helped out at one of our conferences and I learned more about our organisation and got to meet a lot of people from the other trusts around the country. I have also been involved in our AGM, which was a great experience, as they had all the CEO's getting together to discuss the future and issues that they had. Work also has a christmas party, and leaving drinks for someone leaving.

  • 9a. Would you recommend The Wildlife Trusts to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend this company to a friend who is interested in wildlife. As they are a wildlife charity and I think it would suit someone who has a general interest in wildlife and how to help them, and also at the same time help to develop peoples knowledge our the wildlife around them. You also get a lot of opportunities to take part in conferences and different events, which are always fun as you get to meet a range of different people.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to The Wildlife Trusts?
  • I would say ask what the jobs entails fully, as I feel i didn't get told all of the jobs I would be doing and that was a bit stressful at times when I got told I was doing something I didn't know I would do. I would also say ask for help if you are unsure as I have struggled some days and not said anything, but now I do feel more comfortable to say what I feel. Also i would tell them be prepared for fast day and slow days, as sometimes you'll get all the work and others you'll get hardly anything.
