  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role on site would involve me going over and delivering a daily briefing to Yorkshire Water every morning to tell them what works will be getting completed that day. I would then set up any levels that the workers would need to complete their task and would also set them lines and lengths if required. I would also cube up and order any concrete that we need on site and then order a make up load after the pour if required.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have really developed my general knowledge on construction as I was knew to the construction industry when I first started and didn't have as good of an understanding as I do now. I have developed new skills such as how to set up laser levels and how to use new Engineering technology such as a TS16 Total station for setting out co-ordinates on site. I have learnt new skills such as how to work out a grade level on site and set it in a grade laser.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am enjoying my programme because I am working with a good set of lads on site that are there to help me when I need it and also are great company in the office. I am really enjoying the collage side of the apprenticeship aswell due to again working with a great group and also having a good relationship with my tutor which makes collage more enjoyable, I am also receiving good support from my tutor to allow me to complete my work on time and to a good standard.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is really well organised due to us using an online website called eassesor which is a website where we upload our collage work to so that we can keep track of what assignments we have completed and what are yet to complete, it also gives us a percentage which shows us the progress we have made and how well we are doing. My tutor also has a spread sheet that he shares with us that shows us what work we are doing in which lessons and what we have done and what's yet to complete.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I don't receive much support from my employer, I think this is an area that Bentley's could improve on if I am struggling with work I will contact my collage tutor for advice on what actions to take and he will point me in the right direction. i think we could be given more time on site to get evidence for my collage work so we can complete the NVQ units to a good quality

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive enough support from my training provider to complete my qualification to a high quality, when i am struggling with work that he has set us my tutor always finds time to go back over it with me so that i am not falling behind with any work. My training provider has given me equipment to complete my qualification such as a scale ruler, protractor, compass etc to complete all the drawing units on my course after asking site for them but never received anything from them.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification helps me to perform better in my role because they have developed my knowledge on construction massively and i have learnt knew skills that i can use on site such as how to set up a laser level by taking a staff reading of a datum point and adding the staff reading to the datum level and then taking away the level of what needs setting out on site and then giving them a staff reading for them to work off

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • we have any annual sports day in September which is usually held on the third sunday of the month and this involves all employees from all 5 offices and involves all site based employees aswell. we have a mix of sports such as sprinting races, relay races, long distance races and then we also have less serious races such as an egg and spoon race and other races that are for enjoyment like the sack race.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JN Bentley to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • I wouldn't recommend JN Bentley to a friend because i think there are many areas that they could improve on to help their apprentices complete their qualification on time. i think the organisation of the company isn't the best for example when i am need something from them to support me with my qualification it takes more than one email to get to the bottom of what i need. i think there is a lack of support from the company

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JN Bentley?
  • I would say to somebody applying to JN Bentley that to read through their job role and job description carefully and make sure they understand what their role will consist of and what they will be getting asked to do on a daily basis because they will find out that they will have a large workload to complete from day one. would also get them to read about the background information on the company and look at work jobs they could be asked to complete so it doesn't come as a surprise
