  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I sell aftermarket car parts, tools, consumables and garage equipment to garages and account holders, and to the general public over the trade counter. This involves over the phone and face to face. I liaise with external suppliers to order in parts that we do not keep on the shelf. I deal with account management including taking cash, card and cheque payments and making sure they are allocated against relevant accounts and invoices. I also visit account customers on a monthly basis on our company tool van

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have access to an online internal training site which offers training courses in all relevant fields including product knowledge, communication, sales techniques and customer service. I ensure these are always up to date. I have developed my interaction skills with customers, colleagues and suppliers. I have developed and continue to improve my knowledge on the products I sell. I have also attended an external training course and gained my First Aid at Work certificate.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme as a whole is very well structured and offers a lot of support when I need it. However, due to the recent Covid-19 Pandemic, it has made it a little difficult to complete some of my assigned work due to being furloughed for periods of time. It also makes it difficult to arrange meetings/sessions with my tutor. However, if I need help and support on a particular subject I know I am able to email my tutor and he helps me the best he can.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • On a daily basis I receive a lot of support both from my manager, colleagues and HR team. If I have a HR related issue I know I can email the HR team and they will respond with either an answer or solution in the same day. If I have a problem that I need help solving, or if I need help managing my work load I know I can see my manager and he will help me as much as he can.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Due to the recent and ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic is has been very difficult to communicate with my tutor as much as I would like. It would be helpful to have face to face meetings as it makes explaining things and get things explained to me much easier. However, my tutor has been very good in terms of contacting me via email and having remote sessions with me so that I can continue to receive the support that I need.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The customer service qualification I am working towards will help me to become the local Sales Representative for our branch which is the main goal I am working towards. It is also helping me on a day-to-day basis as it is refreshing my mind and reminding of the different ways and the etiquette in which I should be interacting with customers. It is also reminding me to be aware of diversity within the workplace.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are not many extra-curricular activities to take part in after work. A few times a year we have a Trade Show organised in various parts of the country. This is where representatives from all of our suppliers get together and set up stalls with some of the fast moving or new products, leaflets and promotional gifts and customers can book tickets to attend. I enjoy going to these as it gives me a chance to speak to my suppliers and find out any new information that might help me in my job role.

  • 9a. Would you recommend GMF Motor Factors to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Learning Skills Partnership to a friend as it is a very simple, and well structured company. There are no complicated forms to fill out when applying for a course, and the communication from the start is brilliant. The tutors are very supportive and don't make you feel like a burden for asking too many questions, they help you as much as they can. The workload is also manageable to complete around your daily work and doesn't make you feel under pressure to complete within a strict timescale.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GMF Motor Factors?
  • I would advise anyone thinking of applying for a course with Learning Skills Partnership to go for it. Don't be worried, the application can look very long but it's actually really simple. The interview can be a daunting thought but stay calm and speak clearly and enthusiastically. Don't feel under pressure with any of the workload or deadlines, if you have an issue just speak to your tutor. Applying for a qualification through this company can open up a whole new range of future opportunities for you and you won't regret it.
