  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Every day is different. Although my primary job is to repair computers, some days we can help other areas out if they need it. So, usually i will be sat at a workbench repairing a customers laptop. However sometimes i can be helping with the Spare Parts department which includes delivering parts to the engineers. I could also be working with the parts harvesting department which take good parts from old machines to save money. All of these are great ways in which we can work and also learn, which is essential to completing our job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my year as an apprentice, i have learnt many skills which i use daily and also can use further on in life. For example, my customer interaction skills have massively improved. This is because some days we may be required to call customers to ask questions to assist us with the repair. We have also taken an internal course about call handling which helps. I have also learnt how to become more efficient in time management and productivity. At the end of the course, i should receive a qualification in electrical engineering as well.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I would say i enjoy this programme. You meet some great people around the business. There are some great people to help guide you and assist you through the course of you're apprenticeship. The work varies daily, and this can make it exciting as you don't fully know what to expect. The company has a clear vision and they make it clear through internal emails and through the way that everyone works in the workshop.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It must be said that some days things can be a little unorganized. For example, when training, it seemed like we were always moving around as we did not have a clear plan for a bit of it. The support has always been there, especially from our technical specialists. They have been extremely helpful. But, it was the management at the start of the apprenticeship which were unorganized for us. The studying is very organised, we have a day a week committed to college work. This helps us progress nicely.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive a good amount of support. Our manager is extremely helpful, and if we have any issues, we can usually go through him and he will help us as a priority. I've not experienced much with the HR team, but, i do know they have helped a lot of my colleagues. There is a lot of support we can get and the accessibility of it is large, meaning that we can easily get all the help we need easily.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Our college tutor really helps us when we need it. During the COVID 19 Crisis, our tutor has been on his emails daily responding to any concerns we may have about or college work, or any advice in general. The attitude towards us is great and he is always willing to help whatever the situation may be. There is a lot of support also on the college sites which can help us progress as quickly yet efficiently as possible. I would say i enjoy it.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think our qualification helps massively in our job role. Without learning about the electrical components, it is hard to appreciate and see what goes on in a computer to see how it works. We learn very useful tips such as learning how to check for voltage. This can save us a lot of time in some situations, so i would say that this qualification is extremely important in our workplace and we use it all the time. The course helps me appreciate electrical engineering more.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I know of a couple extra curricular activities. The company do have a football team, and a 'race for the stones' 'race' in which participants take their time to go on a large run for charity. We do host social events and some other stuff on the internal workplace program, which is a great way to interact and learn about more things happening within the business. I think there can be a lot more to do in extra curricular times to improve this.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Dixons Carphone to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • As long as you have an interest in computing or even technology, there is a lot to learn and this is a great place to experience all of this. During one year i have already learnt so much, which will stick with me and transfer to other places of work in the future. I believe it is a great place to work and it is fairly enjoyable, due to the numerous aspects of the business and what you do in it.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dixons Carphone?
  • Be yourself and be calm in the interview stages. There may be one step where you need to complete a scenario based quiz, do not panic and over complicate things. Any experience in computing or electrical repairs is a massive help, as it shows a deep interest and also experience. Don't be shy! Like i said before, everyone is really nice and they are not out to get you before you start, they want to get to know you and to make you an employee of this business.
