  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Training provided in the LDC consists of learning a range of skills and improving our knowledge through college lessons. The workshop areas include electronics, fitting and assembly where we complete practical tasks in order to learn new techniques and skills that will be required in the business. College weeks consist of a lot of classroom work where we have lessons led by tutors and make notes. The workshop sections allow us to get more of an insight about what we will be doing in the business

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, within the electronics unit I have learnt multiple wiring and testing techniques as well as in depth knowledge about the components I was using. I have also developed a range of filing techniques within the fitting section and have been given training on pillar drills and mechanical saws. I furthered my knowledge of maths, electronics and mechanical principles within the college lessons and also gained new knowledge such as the workings of three phase motors.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the practical side of the programme, there is plenty to learn and I find lots of the techniques very interesting. I have also enjoyed learning about the knowledge side of things in college lessons but don't enjoy it as much as the hands on learning. I think there is a nice balance within our programme which keeps it enjoyable but also ensures that we are gaining the knowledge and skillset that will be required in the business.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very structured and we are provided with a workshop plan of the year which informs us of how long we will be doing each section and what will be coming up next. We also have apprentice development leaders to help keep us on track and structure our apprenticeship. Everything seems to lead on in a easy to follow way and the sections are organised so that we have plenty of time to complete the workload.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I think that Rolls Royce and our managers within the company are very supportive and are happy to give us advise and keep us on track. Our apprentice development leaders are particularly supportive and are a person that we can go to with any issues or concerns. They also give us regular progress reviews. Any problems tend to be dealt with quickly and we are supplied with everything we need to help us along within our apprenticeship.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Derby college and the tutors who provide our training do try to offer support when we require it in order to help us improve and understand the knowledge better. I think that some of the tutors can be more supportive than others and in some cases we have had to involve our apprentice development leaders in order to get more support from the college. They have previously offered catch up sessions and additional learning which I think is helpful and shows support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualifications that we are working towards with Derby College will definitely help us within our job roles. I think that learning the knowledge behind the practical skills that I am developing helps me to understand it better. I will be working in maintenance so I think that having a good understanding of the components and machinery that I will be working on will definitely help me be able to find faults better and understand why something requires maintenance.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Rolls Royce do offer a lot of extra activities and I know colleagues who are involved in some of the sports teams like football and rugby. I am not currently involved in any of these extra activities because I live quite far away and have hobbies outside of work which take up a lot of my time. Rolls Royce also run company and social events too which tend to be popular. They have quite a lot to get involved in and these activities are open to everyone.
