  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My work has covered live projects as well as tenders and contract negotiations. My role includes financial management and control, specifically ensuring that the project finances are tracked and reported monthly. I present this reporting to senior managers monthly. I also keep track of change and risk, reviewing the impact of key risk items and understand cost and value of change events. My role also deals with the procurement of subcontractors as well as subcontractor selection, contract administration and payment management and final account. I raise applications for payment which are sent to the client for review, then I raise an invoice for the certified value.

  • I have been part of so many things within BAM Nuttall that have built me as a person, including but not limited to, Reverse Mentoring, Beyond Zero Team, Supply Chain Days, and the support and energy that BAM Nuttall has put into my career development has been invaluable. • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • At BAM Nuttall I have followed two training programmes which have given me the basic knowledge and academic background needed for my career choice. I first completed a BTEC Level 3, NVQ Level 3, HND Level 5 and NVQ Level 5. I am now enrolled in a Degree Apprenticeship with BAM Nuttall and am thoroughly enjoying the higher level of content. It has opened up opportunities to me and allows me in the future to refer back to my learning when needed.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • London South Bank University did provided induction material at the start on the programme, however, I believe communication between the university and the apprenticeship students could be improved. Studying is easy to do effectively at the university with lots of places to sit for revision and good lecturers. Another point of improvement for the university, would be the support provision. Support is offered however the system is not geared up for apprentice student who are only at university one day per week.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support from BAM Nuttall for me to complete my programme is in abundance. My manager is consistently encouraging me to do well and develop further. I have every confidence that BAM Nuttall has my career development at its centre and want to build their staff up to be as good as they can be. If in need of support in the case of any programme problems, the early careers team are simply a phone call away.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Support from lecturers specifically, is readily available via email or in person at the university. However, I have found that support with regards to guidance with problems is limited and I have often resorted to asking lecturers or peers to assist me as have found the course director unapproachable with previous queries. The lecturing team have a very wide range of knowledge and this has been extremely noticeable in their ability to answer class questions.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Reviewing the modules completed so far to answer this question, I have found that my programme learning and vocational activities overlap and hence I have been able to apply what I have learnt at university at work and what I've learnt at work in my university coursework. Many of the topics learnt, play an active role in my responsibilities on site. I have learnt about contract administration and case law which has been the most enjoyable part for me and is certainly something I would like to learn more about going forward.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • When on a live project, it is not uncommon to have social events and team building activities. I have also been fortunate enough to have been involved in a significant number of professional networking events such as the supply chain days where I was able to present to and get to know some of the people behind our key supply chain companies. I regularly try to get involved with ICES or RICS events and this is encouraged by BAM Nuttall. I have also been previously invited to golf events and to join the weekly football matches.
