  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In my role as a Quantity Surveyor for Midgard I have to complete daily tasks such as completing Procurement of Sub-Contractor's, Management of Sub-Contractor's accounts by completing Valuations of Payments, Assessing Variations and Coordinating works to be complete on site. Processing Sub-Contract orders. Procuring materials and managing Labour and Plant. I have to work with my Senior Quantity Surveyor to help out managing the larger Sub-Contractor's and then helping out with the Cost Reporting.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • In my time working for Midgard I have learnt many skills including working in a team. This has been the most key skill I have learnt as not only do I have to work with my fellow Quantity Surveyor's but, I have to work with the Operation's team and the Design Team to ensure the work I am completing is in line with the direction the project team need to be pulling in. I have also learnt how important it is to get a more personal relationship with your closer colleagues. This helps with work as well as you can in your team.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my programme at Midgard. I have met a lot of great people and enjoyed a lot of the work I am being tasked with. What I am enjoying most is that I am trusted with a lot of work which is above my level. I also enjoy the practical element of Construction as you do not have to be stuck in the office all day. You can go out on to site to see the works being carried out which is a great way of learning.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is organised well. I am always being asked by my Senior Quantity Surveyor how my learning is going and also if there is anything he can do to help me with my studies. My Commercial Director is always giving me advice on how to get to the next level and step up. I see myself staying with this company for a long time as the support provided by my bosses is very good.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer at work. I am always encouraged to do more and work harder. This helps me with my development as a Quantity Surveyor as if they throw me in the deep end, I have to swim. This is enjoyable as it is always risk taking. When I am thrown in the deep end, I am always supported if I ever need it by my Senior Quantity Surveyor.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of support from my training provided when working towards my qualifications. Whenever I am confused with any element of the qualifications, my boss is always there to ensure I pick it up and he will explain it to me in the office and then take me out on to site to show me it in the flesh which makes things easier to understand. My Director is always checking in on my progress as well to stay on top.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification has helped me out on the job as it has given me a much better idea of Construction. I believe I have been able to refine my knowledge on Construction when putting together Trade Scopes for Sub-Contractor's. It has also helped me when having discussions with the Operation's team as I can then use the knowledge form the qualification to hold my own and come to agreements on all items that come up on site.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At work we like to go out for a beer on a Friday after work. We have also attended a few football matches together as collectively we have an interest in this. We have also been to play Darts, Golf etc. My company also has a box at O2 where we have been to attend concerts, sports events and comedy shows. This is good for team building and gives you a better understanding of the people you work with.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Midgard to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend working for Midgard as you are given a fantastic opportunity to develop and become a better Quantity Surveyor. The other workers make you feel welcome and work together to try to ensure the work is complete well and in a timely manner. You are treated well and if there are ever any issues the people at the top are willing to come down and talk to you to make things better and explain why they happened.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Midgard?
  • If I could give some advice to someone applying to work for Midgard I would say if you work as hard as you can, you will reap the rewards regardless of if you are correct or if you make a mistake. As long as you are putting in the effort and care they will look after you. I would also say be confident and work with the team members you are with. They will always help you in return when you need them.
