  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is Engineering Technician apprentice. My daily tasks will include; project planning, larger maintenance jobs and problem solving tasks. The main objective of my job role is to improve the efficiency of job processes to save time, money and resources. My daily interactions consist of talking to cell operators and lead associates to understand work processes and identify where possible improvements can be made. As an apprentice, there is a lot of time spent shadowing a number of different people within the business to understand the different job roles and responsibilities. As I have gained more experience within the business, I have been involved with a number of different business improvement projects as well as being given more responsibility to carry out my own project work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During the 3rd year of the apprenticeship, the majority of my time is spent on plant, developing all of the skills that I learnt during the time at college in the 1st year. I have learnt a number of different skills working with the different people and different departments of the business.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The company has a relaxed but structured working environment which gives me the flexibility to complete my work to a high standard. I enjoy working with all my peers and everyone is treated equally. Throughout the 3rd year as a technician apprentice I have spent time with a number of different people in different departments and I have enjoyed every one so far.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship is very well structured with set plans on when tasks should be completed by with regularly scheduled reviews with our course coordinator to review the progress we have made and to set objectives for future reviews. We have a weekly scheduled meeting with our manager to discuss any issues or queries that we may have.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We have regularly scheduled reviews with our course coordinator to review the progress we have made and to set objectives for future reviews. We also have a scheduled weekly meeting to discuss any issues we may have and get support on them. BMW offers me any type of support that I may need to complete my work to a high standard and learn as much as possible during my time on the apprenticeship.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • BMW offers me any type of support that I may need to complete my work to a high standard and learn as much as possible during my time on the apprenticeship. If we have any issue with anything whether that be at college, work or at home, the company will provide any support we need.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my qualification helps me to perform better in my role as the qualification covers the basics of a number of different topics throughout all engineering disciplines. This helps me to perform better in my role as an engineering technician as my role involves working with all of the different departments and technologies within the company.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many opportunities available to me whilst being on this apprenticeship. There is opportunities to attended team building trips such as Skern Lodge and Mountain Challenge events. There is also opportunities to run open evenings at local colleges and talk to students interested in the apprenticeship. There is new activities that are always coming up through BMW for you to get involved in.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is an exciting and enjoyable place to work with a lot of opportunities to develop as a person and as an engineer. And as an apprenticeship it is recognised as one of the best apprenticeships available in the UK. I also feel that the working environment at BMW makes it possible to thrive, learn and progress well through the apprenticeship and your career.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • When applying for the apprenticeship it is desirable to have some engineering related experience/qualifications. During the interview process, it is important to be confident and present yourself well, demonstrating your knowledge in a clear and concise way. When applying for this apprenticeship it is important to understand that it will take a lot of hard work and dedication to complete the full 4 years.
