  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a mortgage and protection manager for HSBC which involves helping customers through the mortgage advise process to buy their homes and also provide protection. My apprenticeship is on the side and I don't really do anything to do with my future role at the moment as I am still continuing my old role until I have passed my exams.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • as of yet I don't feel I have learnt any new skills as such apart from my knowledge I have developed as part of passing my professional exams. I would learn more skills if I was working with people who do that job that I will be going into or by spending time with them but I am still doing my own job and then studying on the side.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am happy to be getting my professional exams but I could have paid and done my exams myself and would have potentially still got the job and been in the exact same position now as I do not feel the apprenticeship is adding any value for skills etc I guess a normal apprenticeship you would be studying and working with people doing the job you are training to do so would learn more and be In a better position but because I am still doing my old job I will just have to learn everything on the job when I am qualified. Some of the evidencing needed for the skills and behaviours is also excessive.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • not very well organised, at the beginning it felt like no one really knew what was going on. I have a better understanding now of what the apprenticeship is but it's not that well structured as my manager doesn't really know about it there is no impact on my day to day job really so it is sort of on the side and I've only been to one development day which was all about team building but as I already work in a team I didn't feel like this was any value to me as I already had the skills and knowledge of how to effectively work in a team beforehand.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager is supportive in giving me my time to study but again I don't feel like this is a normal apprenticeship as I think if it was i would be working with people doing the role and learning on the job. The only learning I do so far is just my studying for my exams.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Kaplan have been supportive and have provided all the material i need to pass my exams successfully i have also reached out to them before for help and this has been provided so i am happy with the support given in relation to my professional qualifications from Kaplan although as i had already sat my first exam i cannot do the face to face revision sessions for the exam as i am further ahead than this so this is the only support i have missed so far but i don't want to hold myself back to attend them.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It doesn't affect my current role whatsoever by doing these professional qualifications but they are essential for my new role and obviously give me lots of knowledge which i will need when i am a financial advisor but this will be once i'm qualified and move into that role as of now i don't use any of the knowledge in my role.

  • yes there are things to be involved in from the call centre i work in they do sports activities during summer they also sometimes do quizzes etc and during lockdown we did a virtual charity walk there isn't much formal networking but i'm sure if you looked into it you could find webinars or something to attend.
