  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I have 21 direct and second line reports. I manage Optivo's older peoples service in the Midlands. This consists of twenty one Independent Living housing schemes. I manage a third of Optivo's schemes, so have two counterparts across the organisation who I work with to attain consistency. We have a diverse staff team, many of whom need very intensive management

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since joining the ILM Level 5 programme, I have definitely developed my skills, and continue to learn. This is my first Senior Management role. I've definitely developed my Leadership, self awareness and coaching skills. It's taught me a lot more about personality types and adjusting communication to suit.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do enjoy the programme, however I do often find it hard to juggle the day job to keep up with my course work. I personally would prefer to be in a cohort without my own line manager and one of my direct reports as we all find it difficult to speak openly in conversations when we are in the same workshops.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Some of our workshops dates and locations have changed a few times. We initially had a Personal Tutor who didn't seem very organised or proactive, however we have had a change in our Tutor, and my current Tutor is fantastic. He's a great support if I need him

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Optivo do offer time away to be able to complete course work. However this does not filter down to a team level and it is not always possible to get protected time away from the day job. Our L&OD team keep in touch about our progress and are always on hand to liaise with Paragon if needed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The initial induction was great, and all Paragon staff were friendly. My Personal Tutor, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] is brilliant, he's really knowledgeable, and although he is clearly very busy he always makes time for me and conversations with him never seem rushed. He explains what I need to do, and is understanding but honest if I cannot hit deadlines.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The formal qualification may not help with this sector I work in, however the content of the course definitely will. I'm being equipped with all the tools I need to become a better line manager and would recommend that all of my team complete the same qualification as well

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have staff networking groups for LGBT+, BAME, Wellbeing, Women at Work and Multifaith, these are open to anyone, and are really valued at Optivo. There is also opportunities to volunteer in our local communities during work time. We can attend external events such as Pride. There are several blogs, videos and learning opportunities available to us all as well.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Optivo to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Optivo has a really strong culture, all employees are valued. I have never worked somewhere were colleagues have so much involvement and respect. Salaries at Optivo are very attractive. As an organisation, we have a great reputation and are very stable in the sector. It's not perfect, but it's by far the best place I have ever worked. I would currently only look at internal development opportunities

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Optivo?
  • Really research our culture, and CORE values. These are taken very seriously, they are not just lip service. Be prepared for a different kind of employer and a lot of fun. Always use positive language, look into Mary Gober techniques. Read our strategic plan - everything we do feeds into this
