  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Prior to lockdown I attended the ASK college in Samlesbury where on a Monday to Wednesday I would complete workshop work swapping from one workshop to another every three to six weeks. On a Thursday I would have a college day where I would complete further education work ranging from maths to health and safety.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills in many different areas mostly from the more practical section at the ASK in Samelesbury. These include skills learnt from fitting such as skin milling or skills learnt from electrical such as wiring an alarm circuit. I have also developed other skills such as timekeeping skills and interpersonal skills through interacting with my peers.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my program a lot as I am treated like an adult but also expected to act like one. I am given a higher level of responsibility than most other further educations. I am given many challenges to overcome as part of my course and enjoy the task of beating these.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program is rather well structured as it is rare that I am completely unsure of what is occurring next however there have been a few times when I have been unsure as to what I will be undertaking next. I feel as at times the organisation lacks slightly as I often find myself receiving multiple stories and explanations when trying to find something out.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive plenty of support from my employer. Whilst we are often left to attempt problems and tasks by our self if we require helps we are able to ask tutors for assistance. For general help the employer will assist people with learning disabilities if they so require it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive plenty of support from my training providers when working towards my qualification. This includes support on day to day tasks such as wiring a circuit to support throughout the whole of my course such as if I am struggling with the way a tutor teaches I am supported when catching up.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe that through working towards and completing my qualification I will be able to perform at the required standard when I complete my apprenticeship and move entirely into the workplace. When I get into the fourth year I will be almost at the workplace standard anyway and will be ready for when I complete my course.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a few potential extra curricular activities such as our trip to outward bound in which we completed off the job training but also bolstered our relationship with our co workers. At my workplace activities such as lunchtime yoga are available to all employees should they wish to partake.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because the course is rewarding and challenging and you are treated like an adult and paid well. The apprenticeship has many perks as well as a favourable week. Being part of BAE has given me more opportunities in a short space of time than almost any other further education program could

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Do plenty of research into the company including their products and sites as well as a brief look at the history of the company. Make sure to practice interviewing and make sure you are a team player and can work well with others and listen to what they say and their opinions.
