  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Daily you will need to look into dealstore systems to look at all trading that took place on the previous day. This is for certain stocks that are currently in Takeover. You can expect to be in frequent contact with the Quality Assurance team (Internal) and the regulator themselves (External).

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During the apprenticeship you work toward your level 3 Investment Operations Certificate qualification. You are giving specific training towards this course. Also, there will be courses aimed at some skills such as: communication, presentation, saying no in a professional manner etc. Other skills you can expect to improve are your excel skills as you will be looking at big excel sheets with many formulas daily.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • At first the work given to you can either seem really easy or really hard it depends how you look at before attempting a task. UBS has a great culture and is one of the many reasons I chose to do an apprenticeship here. Once you have settled, you will start to enjoy the placement much more as you have more knowledge and can contribute much more day to day.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme itself has an excellent Structure. Your first few days you are with your cohort of apprentices to network and get to know one another. After this you are taken to desk to meet your team. Then throughout the next few months you have monthly catch ups with HR to see how things are going. From here the communication back and forth is down to you to keep that relationship.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • When it comes to achieving the Investment Operations Certificate, there is a lot of support. You are given twenty percent of your weekly working time to devote to study. You will have bi-weekly one to one meetings with your manager as well as a weekly team meeting to ensure you are kept up to date with everything.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Again, there is a lot of support. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] they will provide you with: a text book, revision sessions, a mentor, an online portal and a 24/7 tutor help line. If you are struggling with a specific area of the qualification you can reach out to speak to a tutor and target that specific area. It really feels as if they are willing to put your needs first.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The modules within the qualification are beneficial no matter where you work across banking and finance. This is because it provides an individual with the foundations required in any banking role. Some things are more specific than others and some bits you are required to do in your day-to-day job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • UBS participate in a lot of volunteering work. Monthly there is an opportunity for someone to participate in something they may never have done before. Within my team we aim to do at least 2 social events per quarter. Even during the pandemic we are participating in virtual socials to maintain our networks,

  • 9a. Would you recommend UBS to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • UBS has surpassed many of my expectation upon joining. If I knew a mate that was wanting to come into finance, I would strongly recommend starting here. The work ethic, the culture and the drive to be innovative are a few reasons as to why i would recommend. Not just that, you are able to maintain a good work/life balance and acquire skills that can take you anywhere in this industry.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to UBS?
  • Make sure you are aware of what role you are applying for and what skills are required for that role. If you are successful and get an interview, be yourself do not put on a fake persona for the interviewer. If there is one thing that I would have liked to have been told is that its not what you know when you first leave school, it's more the who you are as an individual and the impression you leave.
