  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in the BTEC brand marketing team where I cover a range of tasks every day. I look after the main brand campaign (BTEC Works) which involves tasks such as working with agencies to produce content like video, images, messaging and also working with media agencies to create a comms plan including paid social, PPC, etc... I also work on big events such as the BTEC Awards and AoC which take year-round planning as the event and content surrounding it takes a lot of work. I also have to market these events so this includes the digital side of marketing; email, social, websites etc.. I also complete smaller tasks like hosting webinar series, working on previous learner case studies and sharing any projects with internal colleagues.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt everything I know about marketing at Pearson. Prior to working there, I had little to no experience in marketing and have since embarked on a Level 3 apprenticeship in 2018 that I completed to a high standard in July 2019. I then enrolled on my level degree apprenticeship with Pearson in September 2019. Pearson encouraged me to develop myself further and gain even more experience and knowledge about the sector. I had no skills before joining and know I have received a promotion within my team and am considered a qualified, hard-working member.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love the work I do. It's fast-paced, intense but so rewarding. I get so much out of my job and it's all thanks to Pearson. They have put me onto my second programme (L6) just so I can gain more knowledge and skills to benefit myself and my role more. The programme is not what I expected. I am not just learning about marketing but the business as a whole as well which is so beneficial as I haven't worked in a company as big as Pearson before. I enjoy learning about the different aspects of companies and how business works and then being able to apply this knowledge to Pearson is incredible.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Pearson is very helpful and clear on how they want their apprenticeships to work. They offer inductions, for when you first enrol on the apprenticeship so you can meet other apprentices in the business and share experiences. There is a whole team dedicated to making sure you are getting the best/most out of your apprenticeship and if anything goes wrong they are on hand immediately to help sort it. They offer support to make sure you are able to complete your 20% off the job training and even offer you an extra 2 hours a week to make sure you are getting the time you need. They put in place mentors in your team to help with the everyday task and also senior mentors to help you network and to give you real-life experience of their roles. They offer support with helping you explore other sectors of the business, allowing you to shadow another team for a few weeks to make sure you're gaining the knowledge you need to support evidence for the apprenticeship. The teams you work in support you, for example, if exams or coursework is due the team steps up to cover you if you need extra time. Pearson have been absolutely incredible with the amount of support they offer.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As mentioned before, my employer is incredible with supporting me and other apprentices in the business. They have set up apprentice lunches and workshops so you can meet other apprentices in your building. They offer mentors in your team and senior sponsors to help you experience more of the business and network within. They set up external talks and also offer so many opportunities to become apart of external groups and also have ambassadors within the company so you can talk to others. They go above and beyond to make sure you have what you need to succeed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have had a rocky road with LSBU. The administration at the beginning was poor and it took a while to get going with them. There have been a few other issues so I set up a meeting with Pearson and told them what I was experiencing and the team have immediately stepped up to make sure all my problems are being addressed and sorted. LSBU are concerned with the way things were handled and have been immediate in their response (once they were alerted about the issues) in trying to sort it. My course leader has been assisting me in trying to improve my experience.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification assists me in my role every day. I take what I am learning from LSBU and implement it as much as possible. By learning and working, things just fall into place. Everything goes hand in hand - I learn about something at uni and then I'll have to do it at work and already know what I'm doing and vice versa.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is so much on offer at work that I can participate in. They offer workshops, external events, volunteering experiences, work experience, talks, and so much more. I recently went to a job fair to represent Pearson and apprenticeships. I have also done talks in schools and to employers. I have also recently joined the stationer's community and been bound to them offering me more experience and networking.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Pearson plc to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Without a doubt joining Pearson has changed my life. I was in a mediocre job without progression and since joining my development in my role and as a person has been non-stop. I have received a promotion, won an award and my team hold me as a valued member. I continue to improve everyday and Pearson continue to support me.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Pearson plc?
  • Just do it. It was without a doubt the best decision I ever made. There are so many opportunities for you to develop yourself and be supported in what you are doing. Pearson really just want the best for you and to see you succeed which is incredible to be able to say about a company so big.
