  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a care assistant my role is to assist residents in dementia care with practical tasks that they cannot manage themselves or may need encouragement to complete independently. These tasks vary from helping with washing, dressing and going to the toilet. I also provide emotional support to residents by keeping them company, getting to know them and talking to them on a regular basis.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt so much working in Dementia care. While on the training program I learnt a lot about medication administration, the role of a Team Lead. I have gained a lot of self confidence by shadowing and observing from Leads on the floor. I have complete training courses on dementia which has helped me to understand the needs of my residents better.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoyed the programme as it enabled me to learn new skills that have made me a better more confident carer. I enjoyed the training with my tutor as he was very helpful and supportive making the learning experience easier. At first I found it difficult going back over things I hadn’t done in years life Maths skills but it was good to push myself. Again this has helped me to build knowledge and self confidence.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program was well organised in terms of the learning and time with my tutor. Everything is online, all work books and training. At first this was a bit of a challenge for me as I had to learn to navigate my way with online learning courses. All training I have done in the past have been workbook based. So becoming more computer literate has been part of my learning.
