  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day-to-day basis I have the role of a Building Services Engineering Technician, working within the three disciplines of Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health Engineering. I mainly use Autodesk Revit, AutoCad and Autodesk Navisworks, there are other programmes used less frequently. I set-up Revit Models and lead the Revit side of Engineering Progects as the Model Manager controlling the Revit Model.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt new skills in all prorgrammes mentioned above. As before I had never used them. I have become competant in Revit, Cad and Navisworks. As well as expanding of my own previous skills in Work, Excel and general document writing.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I very much enjoy my programme as I have learnt so much in Engineering and Engineering Computer Software. I have also had the opportunity to work with some very skilled and inteligent individuals in the Building Services Engineering field.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Despite having learnt so much and the fact that I take great pride in my company, I feel in recent years the apprenticeship structure has deteriated but is getting better with a new organised strcuture.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive alot of support from my immediate team of technicains and from my department (BE-1). I can be assured that someone will always be arround to help me with any problems.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I think my training provider has given me very useful guidence and support when gaining my NVQ qualification.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My NVQ has improved my writing skills as well as expanded my knowldege in Engineering and BIM alike.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many socials and events that go on thoughout the year.

  • Yes

  • It is a great opportunity to learn and develop skills at a professional organisation.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
  • Be prepared to learn new software that can sometimes preove to be diffcult to use.
