1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Generally I'll be in the labs carrying out some testing on tea bags or our e-comms products. I also look after equipment in the lab. Recently, I've been involved in some regional ice cream projects and have started to work with people in different areas of the business.

2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I've learnt a lot about using lab equipment and testing different types of materials. I've been on a few training courses- an example is liquid nitrogen training. Furthermore, through projects I have been developing my people skills ( how to communicate with people internally and externally) and my confidence.

3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy the programme! As someone who has had no experience in the industry, my colleagues are always willing to help me out or teach me something new. I've been given lots of opportunities to extend my knowledge beyond my site- these experiences have been very valuable.

4. How well organised/structured is your programme?

The apprenticeship has been very organised with lots of inductions. I have regular meetings with my manager, who has been very supportive in starting my career. The university course has been a little unorganised. With the course being new, I hope they are more organised for next year.

5. How much support do you receive from your employer?

I've had lots of support from not only my manager, but people in the packaging team. As I mentioned above everyone's willing to help you out! Furthermore, I've had support from apprentices in the years above, to help me get set up and answer questions I have.

6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

For my uni course, I have a 'Work-based learning coach' who I have quarterly meetings with to ensure that that I'm on track with uni work and to create targets within work. Also, lecturers are easy to contact if you are stuck on your work.

7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Being in first year, there are some aspects of the course that I enjoy and see myself apply at work, such as theory of materials and their properties. But some modules, are not be as relevant to work.

8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, there are lots of clubs that you can join from sports to music- it's a great opportunity to meet people outside of your department as well.

I really enjoy working here! There's lots of support and opportunities for learning. It's a brilliant company to work for and I'm glad I didn't choose the traditional route of going to university.

10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?

Do some research about the company and our vision/values. Also, be yourself and ask questions at the interview.
