  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Each day at AstraZeneca is slightly unique and never boring, I do a range of laboratory activities, but my primary role is working to monitor any microbial contamination within our manufacturing areas to keep the product (the drugs) and patient safe. I know that if I and my team didn’t do the work, we do then AstraZeneca would not be able to safely supply specific medicines, this motivates me every day

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting my apprenticeship my academic knowledge in my field has increased dramatically but this is not all that I have gained from doing this apprenticeship. AstraZeneca has taught me how to be a successful member of a team in the professional setting. It has also shown me the importance of time management and communication skills. Since starting my apprenticeship my confidence has massively increased.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I look forward to going into work everyday, it doesn't feel like something I have to do but something I want to do and for this I feel very lucky. I have massively enjoyed all of the experience so far including the academic, professional and social aspects. I look forward to my future at AstraZeneca.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Although it took a few months to get used to the structure, and this new way or working along side studying, with the support I received I now feel confident in all aspects of my working and academic life. I always receive at least 20% of the working week off rota to spend studying towards my degree. There is also always someone to ask for guidance whether that be at work or at the university.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I receive from my employer is endless, whether it is help with the job at hand or help with an assignment for university there is always someone willing to help. Regular check ins with managers and fellow apprentices are an easy point to discuss any concerns I may have regarding my apprenticeship.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My university course is all distance learning so at times it can be daunting and difficult but help from the university is only a call or email away. The university stay in touch constantly and regular check ups mean there is a designated time to express any worries I may have.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The work my course teaches often directly links to my job and this also works the other way round, my on the job training often helps me to complete assignments. The course from my training provider sets me with a solid foundation of knowledge and my job allows me to apply this knowledge. I believe my course has allowed me to understand more about the pharmaceutical industry on a whole.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • AstraZeneca Macclesfield annually carries out a summer fair, this a great family orientated day and gives us a chance to share what we do with families local to the site. I have also taken part in career fair events. There is also a gym on site that has regular gym classes. I have also occasionally gone for a run around the running route on site with members of my lab.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend AstraZeneca as a place to work to anyone, because I believe it is a truly great, friendly and inspiring place to work. I believe the company pushes and supports you to get to where you want to be. All of the employees are incredibly friendly and kind and I believe this is because we all work to follow the AstraZeneca values and behaviours.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
  • The biggest tip I would give to people wanting to apply to AstraZeneca is to believe in yourself and be confident, because this allows us to preform better. Another tip I would give is to do your research on the company before applying and always ask questions as it registers interest
