  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Project Controls Apprentice. Currently I am in the planning department and for the past 5 months have been working offshore on a 2 week rotation. Offshore I was in charge of the Progress Register and had to update the progress on all jobcards as and when they were getting worked. Also, a big part of the job was doing weekly reports for the Project Manager and the client.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot on Microsoft Excel and am very confident using it, unlike when I first started. I also completed a Mechanical HNC & HND, an ECITB Diploma in Project Controls, numerous online course. Also competed the relevant course to allow myself to go offshore (BOSIET, MIST & Control of Work). I have learnt a lot about the offshore industry and how it works, also picking up on how systems work and procedures.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme and especially enjoy working offshore. If the opportunity is there for me to go offshore again, I wouldn't hesitate to say yes to it. Everyone that I have met and worked with have been great support throughout the apprenticeship and have always done their bit to help me along the way.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Amec Foster Wheeler?
  • I feel valued by AMEC FW as whatever project I have been on, people have always wanted to give me stuff to do which helps as its good as it gets me involved with things. If I was sitting with nothing to do however, I just ask if there is anything I can help out with and there is always something to help out on!

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is structured well and I don't have any negative comments to say about the organisation/structure of the programme. They have always given me full support and allow me to organise my own training programmes if I feel it is necessary which is good.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • When I was at college there was always support from all lecturers and people within the company always gave me help if I needed it on essays etc. If I had any problems, I always felt comfortable speaking to lecturers as I knew they would help me resolve it.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Mentors have been good and if I ever needed anything from them, I could trust that they would help me. Again, same with managers and HR. Even people who weren't my manager but colleagues would give me the support if I needed it with anything.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Since being offshore I have been very happy with my salary. However, now I am back onshore it may take a while to get used to the lower salary! I am still living at home so I don't have to much expenses that I have to pay for but I am looking to move out as soon as possible so will get a better idea of how my salary weighs up against living costs soon enough, but I think it will be fine

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes. There are always emails going around organising events, sports and social ones. I should probably go to more but haven't had the time lately! Even if there was an event that you wanted to organise then you can easily do it yourself. There is an events committee and i'm sure they are always open for new suggestions

  • 9. Would you recommend Amec Foster Wheeler to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because I don't have a bad word to say about the way AMEC FW works, or the people that work for them. They have been a great support throughout my whole apprenticeship and given me the opportunity to go offshore which I thoroughly enjoyed.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Amec Foster Wheeler?
  • Something that I was told and helped me out was that, no question is a stupid question. Even if you ask the same question 3 days in a row, keep asking until you fully understand it.
