  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In the mornings, I work through my admin work. Such as booking in meetings, reviews, writing agendas and sending out relevant pieces of work. Through midday I am usually tasked with looking through customer complaints and checking whether or not the needed correspondence has been received. In the afternoons I focus on working through my data entry and financial process such as keeping track of expenses, budgets and overtime.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have really been able to develop my communication skills both amongst my team and the customers I interact with. Through clear communication I am able to provide great service to our customers and add value to my team. I have also developed greatly in my time management skills. As many days I am very busy and breaking down my work to make it manageable helps me before it on time and to a high standard.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Very much. The team I work with is great , helpful and really kind. The company has a great culture and also facilitates working from home. Which is great. It has exceeded my expectations as it is my first job and the whole experience has been great. Everyday the work is different and that is something I enjoy.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I receive plenty of support from my manager. Training was provided at the start over a two week induction period. This helped us get to grips with the workplace. I also had to do a few e-learning modules which helped give us a refresher of what we learnt during the two week induction.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The attitude is very positive within the organisation. We the apprentices receive a lot of support and have regular check ups with our mentors and managers. There is also plenty of well written article upon on the intranet so we can have a read of that as a first resort.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Quite a bit. They are clear in their response and we are provided with plenty of study material. The layout of the sessions they provide is quite good. I do enjoy it as I am working towards something. The only issues is their response times are sometimes quite slow which can be frustrating.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • In all honesty for me it is the other way round. This could be because I prefer to learn in practice and then apply theory. However I tend to learn it all first hand at my workplace and then transfer over those skills. My employer provides great support and knowledge helping me to learn a lot about the role and the industry.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there is plenty of extra activities to take part in. Also the office is a great place with a great modern cafe and 24/7 gym. Usually when I am not working I tend to make use of the gym. I have attended a few company events and the whole experience has been good.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Financial Ombudsman Service to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great employer and It is a great place to develop experience and skills. I have always wanted to work in the financial sector and having the ability to work whilst I learn is a great feeling. I wish to develop my career further and I think it is a great place to start your financial career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Financial Ombudsman Service?
  • The application was well laid out and the interview was held at the office. I would recommend researching the laws that give the service legal powers before attending. In regards to experience and opportunities these come up often and I would encourage to take on as many as possible so that you can develop quicker and gather more experience.
