  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • carry out maintenance activities on electrical apparatus and plant on Dungeness B power station. This is done in a team of experienced maintenance technicians, i will work on switch gear ranging from extra low voltage to high voltage. also i will carry out work on batteries and motors. Batteries are done on a weekly basis to agree with the site licence. Motors can be anything from a service and inspection to a overhaul.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • due from leaving directly from secondary school all of the skills i have developed through our learning process with babcock engineering academy, in the first two years of the apprenticeship. i am now in my third year of my apprenticeship and i am learning new skills everyday and will continue to grow my skills and knowledge.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • i thoroughly enjoy the apprenticeship from every aspect of my work, too all of my colleagues in my team, everyone is very supported of my development. they will always push me to increase everything that i know and any skills that i need to have to carry out any jobs in the role.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • there is an in depth structure to the program. the first two years are completed away from your teams at your home site. this is done with the other power stations from around the rest of the country so all apprentices have a base knowledge that is the same. there is then regular training back on site to keep you up to date with all training needed.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • i receive support from ll members of my team. my manger is very supportive and i will regularly have progress meetings with him to discuss where i am and what i need to do to improve. my apprentice coordinator is also very supportive as she makes sure i am developing in the right way and achieving my targets at the right time.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • i really enjoy the course that i do and it has been made to fit the roll that i carry out in the work place. i have regular updates and meetings with my NVQ assessor to make sure that i a m progressing correctly and in the right way to achieve the qualification

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • the qualification is tailored to the job role extremely well as every aspect of the course reflects a role in my day to day life as a electrical maintenance technician. all the theory learnt in the first two years of the course is very applicable to the job role i carry out.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • our team organises meals and activities that we take part in regularly such as curry nights and golf events. we also take part in charity events such as movember and football matches for prostate cancer which are organised as a site wide event. there are also many people in other teams that play musical instruments like i do and we get together and jam from time to time.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • because it is a great company to work for. it has a great reputation and provides a rare job in a rare and interesting industry that the nuclear industry is. Also you work with like minded people who are very keen on the work they are carrying out and have a passion for their role.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EDF?
  • The tips that i would give to any body applying is that they need to have a basic understanding of how the nuclear power station operates. they also need to be interested in the nuclear and electrical industry and like to work with there hands and fix problems as they arise.
