Structural engineer apprentice Review

Amending drawings by using information from architect and other engineers. Creating new drawings using revit. Drawing sections and elevations on revit.

I’ve learnt to use revit. I have definitely developed my communication skills. I have also developed my presentation skills.

I enjoy my programme but could do with more engineering work as opposed to design work. Although I do enjoy the design work.

I would say the programme could be structured a bit better in terms of how long you would learn certain things. For example: 6 months design, 6 months site work.

I would say I do receive a good amount of support from my employer. I get a lot of help from my team members and if I have any problems HR are always so helpful.

My lecturers are pretty good when it comes to explaining things I don’t understand.

I can apply what u learn in the classroom to what I do at work. Sometimes I will learn something in the classroom and will come across it at work and understand quickly what I need to do.

My company has a 16.30 club where employees do short presentations about a project which I attends. Our L&D manager also set up an apprentice networking group where we meet quarterly.

This company isn’t too big where you’re just a number but a valued employee. Speaking from the people I have worked with they’re very supportive and always understand that you are learning and are always helpful especially if you need help with uni work.

In your interview - just be yourself. Don’t be afraid if you are uneducated in the field, that’s what an apprenticeship is for, to learn and work at the same time.
