Assistant tax advisor Review

General corporate tax compliance and advisory work, including preparation and submission of corporate tax returns, and ad-hoc advisory projects and questions from clients. My everyday role is supplemented by internal training carried out within and outside the team. Alongside this, I am completing my ICAEW ACA qualification to become a chartered accountant.

Learnt client management skills and developed both internal and external communication abilities. I have learnt a great deal of general tax knowledge through structured EY led courses, early on in the programme which set me up well for performing my role. Additionally, through ICAEW ACA qualification I have continuously developed my accounting abilities and understanding of how businesses operate.

I find the programme to be well structured, with good networking opportunities for building a successful future career. Occasional concerns with communication of training dates etc. which is outsourced by EY to Kaplan but no real issues. The team I work in is very supportive and social, and I appreciate having a personal counsellor to discuss any issues with.

The programme is well structured with a standardised format which can be quite rigid at times so a degree of added flexibility would occasionally be better however the reasons for applying a standard process are reasonable. There are good induction processes with initial training to act as a gentle introduction to the firm and prepare new joiners.

As mentioned, on joining I was assigned a counsellor and buddy (a peer) to assist with any questions or concerns and I have regular meetings with my counsellor to keep in touch. I also feel that I could speak to any other member of the team if needed with any issues due to the very open and understanding culture.

The training provided is of a good quality and I am able to contact tutors with questions outside of teaching time which is a great help. The timing of college dates can sometimes be unusually staggered before the exam which makes juggling work and exam requirements more complicated, and sometimes requiring annual leave before college.

The ICAEW ACA qualification is extremely useful in my day to day job, with the tax specific exams directly supporting my technical work where I can put the skills into practise, and the other exams supporting my general understanding of finance and business which compliments my ability to engage in client conversations.

There are many social activities to get involved with across the firm, including corporate social responsibility activities, charity walks, team lunches, along with numerous networks to become a member of. The office itself also organises monthly drinks, lunchtime talks and lunchtime yoga with numerous opportunities to meet with other employees in and out of work.

The sense of community is very strong, the people are incredibly supportive and keen to ensure that everyone is able to develop a good long term plan for themselves in an area that they both enjoy and find interesting. The salaries are in line with the industry averages and the people factor tips the balance.

Make sure to have an understanding of the firm's beliefs systems and values, including its aims for the future. It's always good to show a sense of your personality and give examples of extracurricular activities to help the person reviewing an application to get a better picture of you and ensure that you are matched with a likeminded team.
