  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I currently work for a JV who are the main contractor for a large utility client. I complete Commercial and contract administration across multiple projects across our joint venture. I am directly involved in raising compensation events and early warnings upstream and downstream, placing sub contract orders, payment assessments for sub contractors, cost reporting and forecasting. I am a frequent presence around the sites attending various meetings with sub contractors and with the client.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My background is outside quantity surveying so this role has led to me developing massively. I have learnt a huge amount about the role of a quantity surveyor and have the opportunity to complete the role and develop. It has enhanced all my previous skills such as team working and communication 10 fold and enabled me to develop new skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do enjoy my programme as it enables me to learn the role on a more broad spectrum. My current role for a main contractor means that I deal with a lot of contract administration. The programme enables me to learn the other parts of role which will enable me to be a more rounded QS. However, the assignment deadlines are an added pressure but are manageable with the support I receive.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme I attend is in its early stages of offering the degree apprenticeship so it is anticipated that there will be some teething problems. Due to this there are some issues at points surrounding communication and the way things run. However on the whole it is organised and structured.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I have received from my employer has been excellent. The people I work with directly on my JV such as my line manager and colleagues always have more than enough time for me to ask any questions I have and provide me the time and support I need to get my assignments completed on time.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • All of my lecturers and tutors have time for you to ask them questions if you ever have any and provide support. There is always the opportunity to send them an e mail with any questions and responses are always received promptly. You always have the feel support is there is needed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel I learn the most in my current role from completing the role im doing and receiving the advice and guidance from the excellent QS' I work with. Where the training provider helps is learning different aspects of QS work that I do not have the opportunity to complete in my current role due to the aspect of Quantity surveying we complete.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes. There are always social events organised and meetings which enables the whole of the JV to get together and share ideas and experiences. The SLT are always trying to come up with new ways to integrate and socialise as a team to make sure morale is high and everyone has opportunity to communicate.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Costain to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are company that are continuing to grow and become a key player in the industry. There are always opportunities to develop and you will always be provided the support to take the opportunities offered. They are very driven to invest in the younger generation which has provided me the invaluable opportunity to have a career in the industry.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Costain?
  • Take the opportunities given and if you are offered any support take it. Be prepared to work hard but be aware that the hard work will be rewarded further down the line. There is no better company to take the apprenticeship with if you want to develop within the industry.
