  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The project I am currently working on is the Transpire rail project so is mostly in the pre construction phase. At the moment my team is surveying the track so my duties include preparing the equipment for the day, using total stations, installing targets on track etc.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I would say the skills I developed the most is adaptability and focus as this role requires a level of concentration to ensure the surveys are accurate.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme as you get to learn while gaining valuable on the job experience. Day to day onsite I enjoy it because every day is different as an engineer.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well organised as both the apprenticeship managers and line managers keep you up to date to what is required and are always there if you need any support.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I believe we receive good support as they are always there when you need to get hold of then or have any questions.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We receive good support when in college as our lecturers always go above and beyond to helping us with any issues, even outside the mandatory college hours.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification does provide the basic foundation knowledge for the construction industry as a whole. However, on site each project is different and varies so it may not be applicable to the same degree as it is to other projects.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there multiple sporting activities when in college and there is networking event to attend.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend this apprenticeship as it is an excellent opportunity to start a career in an exciting industry and you will receive all the support you will need.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • I would advise to research the role thoroughly to understand what's the Jon entails on a daily basis, to research bam as a company and maybe look at what projects you would like to work on in the future.
