  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a Data Science degree apprentice, my role includes performing weekly runs of data models / flows and ensuring the results outputted are reliable. I use different mathematical checks such as, calculating the variance. I use different types of software each day. I also extract and run analysis on data to check the quality. This involves using algorithms and different programming languages. I work and interact daily with other apprentices as well my manager and other team members.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Data Science is a difficult degree, the content is very technical. However, I have had a lot of support from my team as they are always giving me new opportunities in which I can apply the skills I have learnt. There are some aspects of the programme which are challenging and stressful, but this is all worth it as I am gaining invaluable work experience.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of my programme is okay. The expectation of knowledge on the degree programme is at a very high level (A Level further maths and computing are very useful subjects to have), therefore the structure has adapted based on the cohorts ability. The first year has involved a lot of learning in University and work, sometimes this hasn't always aligned. But overall, the programme is well organised. I get 4 days at work and 1 day a week to study.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I get a lot of support. There are always new opportunities, projects or training to get involved in. They're always there to answer any questions I have and help me when I encounter a problem. My first year has involved a lot of learning, including about Unilever as a company, work life, technical skills and so much more, therefore I have had a lot of time dedicated to me to make that process as easy as possible.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have received a lot of support. They provide a lot of excellent resources to enable your learning. Despite them being in York, they are always quick to ensure questions are answered and schedule a call to help you with a specific problem. They have adapted the course to suit our learning style.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The skills I learn from University are very transferrable. Whilst the first year has been a lot of foundation knowledge, I have been able to isolate key concepts and use them in a work environment to help add value to my team. The degree is providing me with knowledge I need to be able to practise data science.

Also, being a global company, there are endless opportunities and always something new to be involved in.

  • Unilever is a globally renowned company therefore there are so many opportunities. Ensure you understand what Unilever is about and what products they sell.
