  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My data scientist role includes a variety of different tasks. The part I most enjoy is using Python programming in order to analyse data (machine learning, reshaping data, and also using many different statistical methods learnt through both my role and my training provider). I've also worked a lot with SQL and PowerBI to build reports.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many different skills during my role. When I first applied I had hardly any prior knowledge in data science other than A level maths and computer science, so almost everything in this role is new to me! On a course-based level, I've learnt about and used machine learning, statistics, AI and data ethics, Python, PowerBI, excel and definitely more that I've failed to mention. On a personal level, my confidence and communication skills have hugely improved.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love my program, and I'm certain that choosing this course was the best decision I could've made for my future career. Data science is really interesting, and its growing incredibly fast so being able to be in a company with a large data scientist presence is amazing. The amount of trust and responsibility I'm given in my team is more than I ever would've imagined, and I've had so many great opportunities to work on projects.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From Unilever's side, my programme is structured very well. I have been given the opportunity to learn many new skills, and work on many different projects as part of my team. The work I do is often challenging enough to help me progress, but I never feel overworked. There is an amazing support structure, and my line manager always makes sure that the things I am working on are relating to my course. The University side is not as well structured. The teaching is done in week-long blocks every 6-8 weeks, with homework set in between. These blocks are challenging and hard-work because of 'information overload'. I also feel that if I did not have strong grades in Maths and some experience in computing I would've really struggled. However, this is the first year this course has been offered. The university has been really attentive to feedback, and is incredibly supportive with work when in a gap between teaching weeks. So don't let the structure put you off as it could improve. This course probably isn't for you if you don't react well to self-directed learning and adapting to what learning is necessary for your role.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is always really supportive of my course, and obviously cares about my development and role within the team. My line manager often checks-in on what I have been learning in my course, and makes sure that the work I do in my team is relevant. My entire team is always happy to help with any questions I have, no matter how silly! Being surrounded by an experienced and incredible team is an amazing advantage to an apprenticeship programme.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Although the course content and structure of the course can be a bit hit-or-miss, my tutors make it really clear that they are always on hand to help. They organise drop in sessions, both virtual and face to face, and are happy to have one-to-one sessions on any topics you are struggling with.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification links really well to my role, and pretty much all of the content I learn feels relevant to my position. You do need to be a bit flexible, as sometimes I'm required to learn things in my role that I haven't learnt through my tutors, and sometimes I learn things from my tutor that I haven't had the chance to use in my role yet. However, the training provides much-needed context and really helps my understanding of a lot of different things.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a lot of things to take part in. There are usually workplace events that are held in the canteen, as well as gym classes and extracurricular events you can get involved in. We also have team events like dinners etc. Unilever has a strong apprentice presence, so there is a really great network of apprentices that catch-up every now and again. If you look to be involved in something, there is something for you!

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Unilever is a great company. It is known throughout the world and has really strong fundamentals like sustainability and purpose that anyone can get behind. Everyone I have met, especially my team, is supportive and is always willing to tell you about their roles or answer any questions you may have. I couldn't think of a better place to begin my career, and I am so grateful to have this opportunity.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • The advice everyone gives is true: be confident and be yourself! If you are thinking about applying, do your research into the course content and think about if its right for you. Think about what you want to get out of the opportunity, and make sure to make it clear! You'll be surrounded by people who can help you advance your career and enable you to have opportunities, so use that as an advantage.
