  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Everyday is different but on most days I have either formulations to make or measurements to take (using different analytical equipment) in the lab. Other than that, I have different meetings with project leaders on the next steps regarding the project.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Analytical skills. Communication. Working both independently and as part of a team. Application of theoretical science. Problem solving. Critical thinking.

    8/10

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I mostly enjoy my role however it can sometimes get a little repetitive. There is a limit to training opportunities in my department and therefore opportunities to develop.

    5/10

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Quite well organised. Training arises as my skills develop. Quite a dynamic environment so sometimes not well organised but that comes with the nature of the work.

    6/10

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Lots, whether from my manager, project team, department, other apprentices or the apprenticeship mentor.

    9/10

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Quite hit and miss with support from my University. They're not always available and the fact that the course is distance learning also causes several problems which aren't always swiftly fixed.

    4/10

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As my role is not predominantly analytical, I haven't applied much of the theoretical science to my role. However, the module lab skills helped quite a bit as they were centered on project management and the business industry.

    5/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • My work has lots of different societies to get involved in. Apprentices within the company also meet up occasionally for social events.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's a very friendly workplace, everyone is always keen to help out and offer support. Lots of training opportunities within the company as you move between departments.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • Do your research on the company, find out what Unilever stands for and its goals. Be yourself, that's when you're at your best. During the tour with an older apprentice, ask as many questions as possible, be inquisitive, they'll gladly answer. During the technical interview, you don't need a right answer, they're mostly looking at how you approach the problem and go about reaching a solution. During the competency interview, use lots of examples.
