I work as a Research Scientist at Pfizer. My job involves supporting and running manufacturing, analysis and research for a medicines that will one day hopefully make it into patients. Day-to-day is hard as the work varies, but will normally consist of various lab work and experiments
Throughout my apprenticeship I have done nothing but learn a variety of new skills which I would not obtain through formal education. This can vary from soft skills such as presentations and organisation, or more technical skills such as advanced chemical theory, instrument maintenance and use and general lab skills.
As with everything it has it's ups and downs, but overall I would rate my programme as being very enjoyable. Pfizer are very supportive, there are good benefits and I feel like I am always learning and improving. I also work with an excellent and friendly team
The University aspect of my programme I found organised and deliver a robust teaching schedule. The competency part of my programme I found generally very disorganised, with the training provider and Pfizer having very little idea as to what to do.
I receive a lot of support from Pfizer, who are considerate around University deadlines and my manager is always willing to help me or answer and queries. It is worth noting however, that with the Pfizer programme you are employed by Cogent as a contractor. They provide little support
The training provider, University of Greenwich provides a lot of support. They are considerate that you also have work 4 days a week and are always helpful with assignments and teaching material
I feel that Pfizer has taught a lot around the theory of my role, so has not provided an additional information around this subject. It does however, still provide information around a number of different aspects involved with chemistry
There is no formal activities, aside from the Christmas and Summer party. However there are a number of new starters and young colleagues who regularly get together for social activities
Yes
Pfizer has been nothing but supportive towards me and allowed me to grow as a person and in my career.
Remember to be enthusiastic and inquisitive
