  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is a site engineer and this role involves giving gangs on-site setting out information such as line & level, and ensuring that the correct permits are in place so that the gangs can continue working.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have continued to develop my AutoCAD skills & I have learnt how to use a GPS and a range of other setting out techniques so that whenever I face a problem on site I can use these techniques to ensure the gangs don't stop working.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme, it is giving me a feel of how things work on site, aswell as learning in the classroom.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel that it is very well organised, and the structure makes my life so much easier to plan my work load. I also like how I have a dedicated member of staff as a mentor who I can go to if I have any problems.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel I receive as much support from my employer as possible. They are in attendance at any meetings that are needed, and they are there whenever I have any problems / issues.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I feel my training provider supply me with the relevant support where necessary, especially on the academic side of things.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my course is helping me a lot in my site role, because a lot of the subjects discussed at university I can take onto site and see how they work in the industry.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Due to COVID, there isn't as much as I would like. I organised a 5a-side football game prior to the lockdown which was enjoyable, and I am taking part in a charity bike ride with my project.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel that this course is brilliant for my personal development, and I feel that my employer helps me in the best possible way so that I can gain experience on site and in the classroom to better myself which gives me better opportunity to achieve high results.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Costain?
  • Be yourself, work hard and ensure that you try your best at everything to achieve the best possible outcome to the apprenticeship.
