  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Managing student and staff access to VLE as well as problem solving issues with the system and answering queries. Content management of share point site. Answering phone calls, responding to emails and checking job logs on issues members of staff have with in house systems and then finding a solution to the problem. Updating database files. Shadowing mentor(s) in web development projects and learning how to programme I order to one day be able to contribute to the creation of software to be used.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Better interpersonal skills such as well as time management and general office professionalisms. Small bits of data analytics such as extracting data from databases and better skills with office products such as access and excel. Skills in web development such as programming and other languages. Also general life skills such as learning to push forwards after failure and learn from it.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It is very challenging and may not be for me. I’m still open minded though and continue to try to succeed and hope to see with more time and effort if I’ll be more comfortable in what I’m doing due to confidence in my abilities. Overall the subject is interesting but as I struggle it takes some enjoyment away.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Fairly well organised in terms of course delivery and available materials. Mentorship at work has not been as well organised however there’s been a lot of lee way in terms of not meeting the standard expected. Some of the courses can be fast paced in bringing you up to scratch from having no ability to a competent ability which is quite stressful.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support could be better, however could be my fault for not taking a more proactive approach. The team size is quite small so there’s rapport between colleagues but less time for helping due to a fast paced environment and not enough man power. Overall I believe that the support is there but it’s not necessarily helped me.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Help seems to be always available and offered if one needs it. There have been issues with skills coaches as myne left the university and finding a replacement has been hard however this seems to be a unfortunate circumstance and I wouldn’t reflect that it is the providers fault.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The modules so far have been quite relevant for my work role and future career prospects. The skills learnt in my qualification and skills needed for my day to day tasks haven’t quite married up yet however the learning via my training provider has helped with my understanding at times in my workplace and vice versa.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There seems to be a lot of perks for staff of the college. There has also been a lot of organised parts/events and the staff are very supportive and friendly. I’ve seen one or two opportunity’s for further development of education and training offered for staff but in terms of extra curricular activities it’s mainly aimed at the students of the college however I’m still new to the college and I may see more extra curricular activities organised in the future.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Bury College to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Overall it’s a good environment to work in with a lot of perks and the work is challenging but also rewarding. For me personally I’m not sure if i suit the job role that I am In yet however I really enjoy working for the organisation as a whole and if I was to leave but saw another posting in a different department come up that I fancied I would definitely apply.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bury College?
  • Make sure that you are up to the workload and that you enjoy what it is that you are applying to do. Other than that be open and honest about your feelings whilst interviewing and working there as effective communication is key at the college and all the staff has everyone’s best interests at heart.
