  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I have to test the quality of products manufactured on the shop floor at PPG Whitford, Runcorn, Cheshire. The tests are basic viscosity tests to using FTIR, Rheometer and EDX testing. The role allows me to also use spectrophotometers, auto-titrators and learn new skills like colour matching. There are also tests like basic solid tests, ph tests and water drop tests.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, report writing has been a new skill I have gained on this course. This has allowed me to develop within the workplace as report writing is something that my company use a lot. It has also helped me to develop data collecting skills, which in turn has enhanced my reports.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoyed my programme, from friendly tutors, to learning new skills during my learning, it was a very enjoyable course. I made new friends on the course and now plan to use my new set of skills in the workplace and give back to the company that put me through the course.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The course was very well organised and structured. The tutors are always on hand to answer any questions the pupils may have and answer very quickly and effectively. The structure is very good and with the recent global pandemic, the tutors quickly adapted the learning format so there was little impact on the course.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I received some support from my employer but due to the nature of the business, there was limited time available to me to study during work. Although this time was mandatory, it wasnt always stuck to by the employer so this should be instilled more. Saying that, they did allow me time when they could and let me go on the course in the first place.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider, I am assuming is Man Met, gave me whatever support I needed, they were always replying to emails quickily and giving me guidance through each unit. The tutors were very knowledgable and provided me with the materials and knowledge needed to pass the course sucessfully. Highly recommended.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The skill set that I learnt through the qualification have become invaluable to me. They have made me a more valuable employee, being able to write reports, perform data analysis and use analytical equipment that I would not have been able to use without going on the course by MMU.

  • 9a. Would you recommend PPG to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a good company to work for and they care a lot about employees and their development. There are plenty of opportunities for progression and they support you through courses where possible. Everyone if very friendly and helps each other out on a day to day basis. The company has a family feel and their values are instilled throughout the business.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to PPG?
  • Prepare your cv and work had prior to your interview. It is important too that you know a bit about the background of the company before interviewing. Be yourself during your interview. Appear smart, confident (but not too confident) and relax and interview well. Its a great company, make sure you get involved!
