1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Apprentice: I am a Level 4 HNC precision machinist learning the basics of machining precision components as well as team work and organisational skills

2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt more skills than I can list but, some key skills are independence, confidence and leadership skills

3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I couldn’t recommend the apprenticeship enough! It’s the best career choice I have taken so far and AWE provide the best resources for the materials I need to learn what I have to. The instructors are really supportive!

4. How well organised/structured is your programme?

Fairly well organised. However, I am a bit disappointed that the organisation hasn’t a clue about what Level 4 machinists are meant to be doing and so we can’t start on site placements until September 2020.

5. How much support do you receive from your employer?

A fair amount. I find that when support is provided it is the best you can’t get. However, limited instructors per person make it hard to find someone who is free to help.

6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

A medium amount. College is usually preferred to do in our own spare time at home but that’s limiting too!

7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I think the training is fairly relevant to our future and not so much now as our role isn’t key to the business just yet.

8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Few and far between (that actually involve a project such as a box cart). If like to see more networking with aspirational people in the business to help get our names out there for people like me who are aspiring directors.

10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AWE?

Keep trying for that spot on the apprenticeship even if you don’t get it first time! Opportunity of a lifetime
