Work experience Review

A one week placement at a corporate business partner's head office (the National Community Lottery Fund) which involved introductions to different job roles such as those entailing legal work and shadowing an events organiser and manager. I also attended and observed meeting between colleagues such as event managers.

I learnt how to communicate professionally in a working environment which particularly came into action when I was faced with a difficult work situation to discuss with my manager a task that I was assigned, but felt uncomfortable to complete. I was also taught the basics of how a business is run.

To a certain extent, I enjoyed my work experience insofar as the experience helped me to realise that office work is not suitable for me and my preferences although I did learn a lot from this side of the working world in terms of developing skills and professionalism.

My work experience was organised in the sense that my manager had certain tasks for me to complete, although I did find myself often with nothing productive to do at hand. Yet, I did have a timetable according to the working day which I somewhat abided by.

I learnt a fair bit by having brief but informative introductions to different job roles and sectors within the company and by shadowing an events manager, I had a good understanding of what it would be like to work there, although it may not be a wholly accurate representation.

My work experience helped me insofar as it made me realise that I am not interested in office work but would much rather prefer to be proactive and engage socially with different people and even be open to the prospect of meeting new people on a day-day basis.

Yes, I was paid for my work experience hours and lunch was either catered for or payed (at the corporate business partner head office) although travel expenses were not reimbursed but could have been, had I needed it or if paying for it would have affected my financial circumstances.

Yes, I did have multiple interactions with different people through observing meetings, having simple conversations with people over their job and shadowing members of the workplace during their daily work life.

Only insofar as, personally, EY seems much more to be catered for people interested in STEM, whereas I prefer the Humanities, Arts and Literature subjects.

Do not be demotivated by work that may seem to be boring or difficult as it will help you to realise what you do not want to do in the future so something will always be learnt in one way or the other.
