  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role focuses on operational safety within our sites to ensure the safety of our employees as well as compliance will legislative requirements, International standards and ensuring no operations on any of our sties can harm the environment in any way. This is a very varied job role and allows a varied day-to-day responsibility.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My inter-personal skills have improved greatly and this is partly because of the apprentice training program that is run alongside the apprenticeship scheme. On top of this there is a blame-free environment whilst in placements and on the job training - The workforce understand that apprentices are there to learn and will perhaps take some time to get their head around things. I believe my confidence has increased and also my ability to handle pressured situations.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Greatly. I really enjoyed the variety the placements gave and the ability to have a taste of everything before making a decision on what I wanted to focus on for my career. At all points I have felt supported and the apprenticeship support staff within the company do a great deal to ensure smooth running of the apprenticeship.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program was well structured and gave enough detail in a breadth of subjects, the final, responsible year allows the apprenticeship to focus on their topic/team of choice to determine what it would be like as a responsible person. The education structure flows nicely and ensures a well trained apprenticeship at the end.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A huge amount. My Employer has been massively supportive both in work and outside of work. You get the sense that your employer has the best of your interests and really wants you to succeed and achieve your goals whilst ensuring you are being supported in the best way. This creates a healthy environment where growth and progression is made possible without any unnecessary pressure or obstacles.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support from the training provider was adequate, The face-to-face time is limited and often it was easier to work out issues amongst the other apprentices rather than going directly to the training provider. That said, the face-to-face time was very useful and provided and good reflection of the work carried out.

    8/10

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My role is supported by all of the training I have carried out. Having both engineering and safety training allows me to look at certain hazards or issues in a more mechanical way with a better understanding of the equipment and its operating principles. This makes it much easier to risk assess activities that may involve heavy equipment

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are extra-curricular activates organised by the company and the employees. The company has set out programs to increase growth and personal development where as the employee organised ones are more sociable and personal e.g. circuit training, rock climbing and social night outs. The workplace also supports rewarding teams for good work and often a meal out is given for good work

  • 9a. Would you recommend Babcock to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because they give you all the opportunities possible to grow and progress as an individual for both personal growth (talking skills, confidence, assertiveness training etc.) as well as giving you opportunities to gain recognised qualifications which will help you throughout your life. The opportunities within the company are endless and really allow a person to find their grounding to get a good start on the career ladder

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock?
  • Babcock is a company that values qualifications, but much more than that, they value personal skills, social skills, your passion and they are often good at picking the people with a thirst for growth or change. If you have an interview bring something interesting that you are proud of, whether it is related to your job role or not, it will show the interviewer that you are passionate and complete your goals.
