  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a trainee accountant is reviewing multiple Trial Balance codes, testing thresholds within these codes and matching them to supporting evidence. If they don't match I query the client as to why there are differences and sign of on my opinion.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am more confident within the workplace. I am more skeptical when dealing with clients and I have developed a more analytical mindset.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • At the start it was very challenging to study & work but a couple of months into the programme I worked out a plan and have stuck by it. Some days are easier than other, depending on the moods of clients but overall it is enjoyable.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Not overly organised. The ICAEW students within the Belfast office have to book their own exams which wasn't told to us as Kaplan thought EY were booking our exams and Ey thought Kaplan were booking our exams. I also think that it is silly preparing/ learning the first exam and then completing the exam 6 months later as I am still trying to complete this exam as they was such a long gap between learning the course and doing the exam.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • EY haven't run any classes but have offered to help if I have any questions in regards to my Accounting course

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Kaplan offer a 24/7 support system to whereby one can write into them with a query and they will get back to you when they can help.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I don't feel the qualification is necessary in order to do my job. It helps understand the role of a Partner/manager.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are networks people can get involved with but they consist of a gathering every so often. EY run family events which there is a group of around 25 people which meet every quarter and organise a social event which everyone is welcome to in that family. Other than those two things there are limited extra curricular activities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend EY due to the hands on experience I have gained from the get go. It is a very challenging job and is not suitable for a lot of people unless you are willing to work very hard to get the job done. It is however very rewarding due to the pressure and stress that is put on yourself when finalising audits within the team.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into as it is very challenging but is very good experience and will shape you. I would suggest that people applying even reach out to school leavers within EY to even meet up for a coffee so that they can ask questions about a typical 'day to day' in EY.
