  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves working in Research and Development labs focussing on Biopharmaceuticals (proteins/antibodies). I work within the analytical team supporting testing of new drug molecules, looking at their binding interaction to target, product and process impurities as well as performing stability studies on the molecules. We ensure the molecule is stable and in a format that can be transferred prior to first time in human clinical trials

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Before starting my apprenticeship I had little to no laboratory experience as I came straight from sixth form. I am able to work independently in the lab running a range of different assays and have had the opportunity to develop outside of my team itself. Some of the assays I routinely run are: ELISA, SPR, 2D-DIGE, CGE, cIEF, SEC and Mass Spec. I have also gained a foundation degree then moved onto the level 6 degree apprenticeship. I have been able to improve my soft skills presenting at events and conferences of 20-850 people

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed my programme! The work that I do is extremely interesting and diverse. The team and department I work in is great, we do lots of team building and social activities so we can work the best that we can together, while keeping the patient in mind. Everyone in the group are really helpful and supportive when it comes to studying open to any questions. My apprenticeship has been so much more than I expected it to be and has really helped me boost my career so early on.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I enjoy the way that my programme is structured, as it is a distance learning course there is no travel to the university for the 20% training which saves a lot of time and energy. The course itself is flexible allowing you to take exams when you're ready and when it suits you providing you are on track. This also allows for you to get ahead in your studies and flex when it's busy in the work place. The course itself is relevant to what I do and I use a lot of the knowledge in day to day work

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager is outstanding and provides me with a lot of support and guidance in terms of my studies and my work. He allows me to own my development and encourages me to push myself to gain more skills, confidence and independence. I have had various mentors over my time at GSK providing different support for the skills I feel I need to improve, which has really helped me grow in my role. Nothing is ever a bother, everyone is always happy to help

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider comes to GSK once a quarter for a face to face meeting to discuss progress and upcoming deadline/exams along with preparation for the EPA. The university module leaders also provide continuous support via email, skype calls can also be arranged. The cohort visits the university itself once a year and we are able to receive face to face support from tutors and the training provider team

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that it gives greater context to the work that I do, allowing me to have a deeper understanding of various area of the business outside of my own department. I find the course very relevant to my role so I use what I have learnt in my day to day work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are various social and team building events within my department and across the apprentice network at GSK. We have the opportunity to meet apprentices from across business units on different schemes. There are also many conferences and professional events run by GSK and by industry that we're able to attend

  • 9a. Would you recommend GSK to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company offers great support to its apprentices with the same benefits as full time employees. The support I have received is second to none and I have benefited greatly from going down this route. The company is extremely supportive of development and personal growth which is something very valuable to me

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GSK?
  • I would recommend reading about the company itself, looking at recent news etc to understand the business and see whether its a place you would like to work. Also I practise with a parent, teacher or friend in terms of interviewing technique and questions. Be yourself and show your personality in the application and interview.
