  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job daily is to manage the site IT, I act as a first line of support when it comes to helping users with their IT needs. I work on a research and development site so I am also involved in the upkeep of scientific computers attached to specific machinery such as microscopes so it is my job to help the end users with their needs such as upgrading operating systems or installing software.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes 100% I have learnt not only to develop my knowledge of computer hardware and software but also learn new skills that I didn't learn during my GCSE's such as how to code or how to look inside a computer and figure out what could be the problem. I also developed knowledge in networking which I have found extremely interesting as it is not something I learnt in school.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am enjoying my programme so much more than I thought I would, I always knew it would be interesting but I have developed so much hands on knowledge that it has made taking exams easier as I have the first hand experience to be able to apply it to questions I am answering. So if I get a question regarding inside the computer I can refer back to a time when I went inside the computer and it makes me 100% better.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is really structured, I was really surprised how well it is planned out, I get a study calendar to keep track of course weeks and exams dates as well as being given extra material to help with exams. And my Learning development coach has monthly meetings with me to keep me on track of my study work and write up's

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a unbelievable amount of support from my employer. Manpower have been so helpful in answering any questions I might have, they keep track of my holidays, schedule regular monthly meetings so they can chat with me to makes sure I am doing ok and they are really helpful in safeguarding and giving me advice for traveling etc.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I get a lot of support from my training provider, once I have completed a course week, I email my LDC and she sends me materials to complete, so I have a website to access called MeasureUp and that allows me to do practise questions like used in the exam. Once I reach the required mark e.g. 80% my coach will then give me a code to book and take my exam.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think they both work coincidingly as my courses help me develop further knowledge of the work I am doing in the office and vice versa my role and on the job learning help me perform better in my exams so it works really well. My exams have helped me so much as they have given me the theory behind my practical knowledge.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes as part of our apprenticeship we are put into pillars these are: onboarding and community - organising nights out, open evenings events to bring the community together and to welcome new apprentices. Schools outreach - this involves going into schools and talking to students about apprenticeships at Unilever. and then digital outreach which involves promoting our apprenticeships schemes through social media.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because you get so many opportunities and it is a great company to work for. Everyone is so nice and helpful. You get to earn and learn at the same time and the support you get during your apprenticeship from the staff of Unilever and Manpower and then Arch apprenticeships is unbelievable.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • Have a genuine interest in the company and I generally strive to do well and help the planet and you'll do really well. Unilever care about the company, their workers and the planet and making sustainable living commonplace so if you have the same idea to help people and to work hard you will do really well.
