  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis I do a lot to do with data management and development. I also do a lot of work with our apprentice community, such as helping with rolling out the Rate My Apprenticeship survey or helping roll out a buddy system for our new joining apprentices. As my time has gone on in the company I have gained a lot more responsibility but I really enjoy my job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Most definitely. My communication, technology skills, team working and job balancing. I have gained training in applications that I had not previously had. I have learnt the importance of working in a team and helping others and asking for help from others. I recently attended a PowerBI training course which was really good.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do really enjoy my programme, due to it being a degree course it can sometimes be challenging (but that is to be expected) I do get to study from home one day a week which is really great and does help with my time management and the university are very supportive. I have gained a lot of experience from this job and a lot of knowledge from my university course.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well organised and structured, sometimes it can be hard to balance the work limit and the studying, however I am always able to take back my study time if I have missed any at any point which is great. I have got into a routine with my studying where I work from home every Friday and my whole team is aware of that, I also put my Out Of Office on and respond to ant queries the following Monday so I have an uninterrupted study day.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer, my line manager has offered me lots of support to help with my University work. Every Friday I take a study day, this as a whole is day that is uninterrupted and left to me to do my studies. If there is ever an urgent meeting that I have to attend on my study day I can always claim back my study time at any other point available. There is also a good community of apprentices doing the same programme that are all friends together and help each other with the programme.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is very supportive, my university tutors are very helpful and respond quickly whenever I have any questions they always respond quickly. I find the online lectures really helpful and generally I do find the Open University to be a really good training provider, I would recommend them to anyone wanting to do an apprenticeship with Unilever.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that it helps a lot because where I work I don't always get to see the wider area of the business, therefore this has really helped me learn about varying business principles. I have always had a passion for business and only being young it can be hard joining a company straight after school so learning how to handle different types of personality in business has been really helpful, and also learning about the different areas of the business has helped me grow my network.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are some, ultimately I would not have had that much exposure as I have only been there 6 months. As a part of the outreach team this does mean that I get to socialise in a professional setting with other apprentices at careers fairs which has been really enjoyable. I went to the work Christmas party which was good fun! Occasionally we do apprentice get togethers which are nice. Recently the future careers department organised the apprentice connect event for all of the UK apprentices to get to meet each other to celebrate national apprenticeship week and this was a really great opportunity.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I am doing a degree level apprenticeship which means that the company are paying for me to do my degree whilst I work which is great. There are lots of benefits to working at Unilever e.g. discounted staff shop, gym, ben and jerrys free every day and agile working. Every Friday I study from home, everyone tends to work from home at least one day a week which really helps with your mental health as a young person if you find full time working quite overwhelming and stressful.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • Do your research into what areas that you are interested in and what role you would like to apply for. I would say to be passionate and do your research into the company. We are a big company that really does strive to make the future better for the planet and people so to make sure that you understand our Unilever Sustainable Living Plan.
