Maintenance fitter Review

My role is a mixture of general maintenance across five different concrete plants, with fabrication, welding, plumbing and anything that job needs me to do.

After a year and a half, I know how to weld, draw and measure out materials for fabrication purposes. Under supervision of my mentor I can use abrasive wheels. I can do plumbing and air fittings, as well as general maintenance tasks such as oiling and greasing machinery on the plants. In addition I can identify an issue and find a solution.

I love the job I do, I'm highly passionate about it however it's the college side of things and the lack of support from managers that prevents the programme from being a 10/10.

I personally don't believe that my area wasn't prepared to have an apprentice. This is due to the lack of structure of the programme and how everything I need to have the best chance of passing the apprenticeship isn't to hand; and even when asked for either gets pushed back or just doesn't happen.

From my mentor, I get no end of support. There are also certain admin teams that try to support me as well as certain colleagues. However the managers do not show an interest and make it seem that I'm just in the way/ irrelevant.

I am changing courses from mechatronics to a fabrication/ welding course, so I am unable to answer this question fully.

Due to upcoming changes to my course, I believe that it is better suited to my role compared to the course I was on orignally.
