I participate in the preventative maintenance of press tools. This includes taking apart the press tool and conducting various checks. If we find a problem we may have to machine the press tool to ensure it is working correctly.
Prior to starting this apprenticeship I had zero knowledge of engineering and manufacturing. I now possess loads of skills to allow me to become a competent tool maker and machinist.
I extremely enjoy my programme now that I have an apprentice manager who is teaching me everything he knows, from the basics to the more complicated end of tool making.
When I first started the apprenticeship college could me very messy and unorganised. Also, there was no structure for apprentices in my plant environment. However, I now have a dedicated employee in plant who sets the apprentices tasks for them to learn everything they need to know in the trade.
I receive a substantial amount of support from my company, as I get on with everyone in my section and have a good relationship with my managers. I always feel comfortable asking anyone for help, as I know I will receive it.
The support from my training provider is good, it could be better but I feel that they struggle to find lecturers capable of teaching the qualification.
I feel as though some aspects of my role were covered in my qualification through my training provider, such as machining skills. However, the majority of my tool making learning has been covered in plant.
JLR provide learning schemes that they fund for you to participate in. This scheme consists of lots of different skills from cooking, to skydiving.
Yes
JLR are a massive company with lots of exciting roles for young apprentices, they offer great learning opportunities to ensure that when you come out of your time you are competent in your line of work.
Come into the apprenticeship with an open mind and a positive attitude, I didn't know what to expect but I now love my job and cant wait for the rest of my career. Make sure to think logically and aim to apply yourself to every situation and you will be fine.
