EDS MCAD Engineer Review

As I am an apprentice in training I provide support for other CAD engineers within the department. Tasks are set that will train me on the CAD software used by the company. The eventual day to day work I will be doing is routing wiring harnesses on CATIA V5 and examining the harness on visualisation software.

I have learnt many things so far during the apprenticeship. I have learnt lots of project management skills and and time managements skills. I have also learnt how to use CATIA V5 which is a CAD software, digibuck which is a visualisation and simulation software and Teamcentre which is a database management system for CAD files.

I enjoy my apprenticeship a lot. There is a lot of learning and growth involved. There are a lot of technical skills that I have picked up along the way. I have learnt that there are many things that are not considered by the user of a vehicle and that need to be considered by designers. Learning all these new skills makes for an enjoyable programme.

The apprenticeship is structured well overall. Things that need to get done get done in terms of academic achievement. However at the start mile stones within the project were unclear. As the apprenticeship goes on the mile stones become clearer. Modules and yearly timings are given just before the start of the year which is very helpful.

My employer is really supportive in terms of development within the company and with the academic side of the apprenticeship. From the academic side there are tutorials if you are struggling with some of the work you are doing at college. My manager at work supports me completely, I have conversations with him if I need additional support.

You will receive support from your training provider in the form of tutorials and drop in sessions from tutors. When struggling with work you can go to these and help and advice will be given. On assignments you will receive constructive feedback so that you can improve for the next assignment.

The training from my training provider provides me with the base knowledge needed for the automotive engineering sector. Some of the modules are aligned with the path way that you have chosen for your apprenticeship. Path way specific modules will be studied to help you perform between in your role.

There are social activities planned quarterly by an internal organisation where they organised outside of work socials. There are internal activities such as lunch and learns where you eat your lunch and can learn about several different topics. You can go to professional networking events if the opportunity arises for your job role.

Advice I would give to other applying for this apprenticeship is knowing what you want to do first. Knowing what sort of engineering you want to be and what pathway or sector you would like to work in. Questioning everything is always a good start if you do not understand anything you should ask and question why something is done in a certain way.
